Lavernock Point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lavernock Point is a headland on the coast of South Wales, and lies 8 km south of Cardiff and 6 km east of Barry.
On 18 May 1897, Guglielmo Marconi, assisted by George Kemp, a Cardiff Post Office engineer, transmitted the very first message by wireless telegraphy — radio — across the water between the island of Flat Holm and Lavernock Point, a distance of 3.5 statute miles (5.5 km).
Because of the extreme tidal range in the severn estuary into which Lavernock point protrudes, there are very strong tidal currents or rips close inshore to the point with speeds that exceed 7 knots for several hours each tide.

Walk #373: Lavernock Point to Summerhouse Point
Rhoose Point is the southernmost point in mainland Wales, a fact that a sign proudly told me. It must be a close-run thing, however, as Breaksea Point a few miles west seems to be nearly as far south.
By the time I reached Summerhouse Point I was feeling very tired, cold and wet, and so I called Sam and told her that I was finishing the walk early.
I could have continued on to Col-huw Point, to the southwest of Llanwit Major, where Sam was due to pick me up, but I decided that the extra couple of miles were not worth risking getting a cold for.
