Though Dundee was once a walled town, the only relic of its walls is the East Port, the preservation of which was due to the tradition that George Wishart preached from the top of it during the plague of 1544.
Dundee is the seat of the Arctic fishery, once an important and lucrative business, but now shrunk to the most meagre dimensions in consequence of the increasing scarcity of whales and seals.
Dundee bore such a prominent part in propagating the Reformed doctrines that it was styled "the Scottish Geneva." It saw more trouble at the time of the Civil War, for the marquess of Montrose sacked it in 1645, and then gave a considerable portion of it to the flames.

The eldest son of Sir William Graham, John Graham belonged to a family which was descended from King Robert III and had acquired the estate of Claverhouse near Dundee.
Viscount Dundee then raised his standard on Dundee Law in support of the Jacobite cause (leaving his wife and newly born son on the family estate at Glen Ogilvy).
The use of "Bonnie Dundee" as an epithet for Graham dates from Sir Walter Scott's song, the original old ballad of that name being concerned with the town of Dundee.

This long-since extinct volcano is featured on the local Dundee City Council logo (below) and its great height dominates the surrounding area, and can be seen from very many miles away.
There is a viewpoint where visitors can scan the view and be informed of the many worthwhile scenes to be had, from the Grampian Mountains to the North and as far as the Southern Uplands of Lothian, south of Edinburgh.
