  Bambooweb: Law (principle)
The term "law" is often used to refer to universal principles that describe the fundamental nature of something, to universal properties and relationships between things, or to descriptions that purport to explain these principles and relationships.
Laws of mathematics and logic describe the nature of rational thought and inference.
Laws of other fields of study include Occam's razor as a principle of philosophy and the Pareto principle of economics.

 An Essay on Law.
A law is a rule which each of us, as a free and intelligent agent, will obey, because we fear the punishment that may come in the breaking of such law, and, by as much or more, because we fear the loss of respect from family and acquaintances.
Laws beyond that which is needed to achieve the goal of "social peace" are not necessary, and, indeed, are harmful in that they would impede man's progress by infringing that which sustains life: freedom.
The common law is an immeasurable set of laws; or rather, as Bagehot expressed it, "they are declarations of immemorial custom, not precepts of new duties." Common law is what Englishmen have relied upon for hundreds of years, and led them, for a period of time, to be the masters of the world.

Subsidiarity as a Rule and a Principle
The subsidiarity principle principle not used in its technical sense variously has been called a constitutional principle [81], one of the general principles [82], and a structural principle of the European Union [83]; it has been said that it is at the centre of the definition of the new rôle of the Community itself [84].
Hence, the conflict between Community law and national law was situated in the sphere of absorption, and it is a case in which Community law supremacy would have to be regarded as a principle to be balanced, after the introduction of the subsidiarity principle, against that latter principle.

The first relates to the law of the sea, and concerns a series of disputes which have arisen from actions by coastal states seeking to enforce laws and regulations within the territorial sea, in fishing zones, or on the high seas.
Moreover, the principle of proportionality must be distinguished from other mechanisms used in international law to control the power of states, such as the principles of good faith and abuse of right.
It would have been useful to examine in more depth the role of the general principles of law in the international legal system, and specifically to discuss the theory, supported by some authors, that general principles of law may be extracted not only from national legal systems but also from the international legal system.

Normally, the law of state responsibility would suggest that in the event of a violation of the principle (however characterized), the state of origin would be bound to make good any resulting harm to the affected state.
Principle 21 is usually considered to be the most authoritative expression of the principle that states should prevent transboundary harm, but there are other important sources, such as the Trail Smelter arbitration.
Merrill's version of the nondiscrimination principle actually restricts the state of origin less than the OECD approach, since he would allow the state of origin (and the affected state) to argue that the applicable standard for transboundary harm is the domestic standard of the state of origin or of the affected state.

A similar set of equations, which is called the law of categorical judgment, is concerned with judgments that require the observer to place (rate or sort) the stimuli into a number of ordered categories.
The law of comparative judgment is a set of equations relating the proportion of times any given stimulus k is judged greater on a given attribute than any other stimulus j to the scale values and discriminal dispersions of the two stimuli on the psychological continuum.
The law of comparative judgment is not solvable in its complete form, since, regardless of the number of stimuli, there are always more unknowns than observation equations.

In speaking of WIP in terms of time, we are making use of Little's law, which can be thought of as a conversion of units.
But Little's law is actually much deeper and more general than a simple conversion of units.
While it is perfectly consistent to apply Little's law to the parts one at a time, we can also speak of them in aggregate terms if we use the proper units.

The right to protection from retroactive criminal law
Literature on the justification for the principle is scarce.
This principle is closely linked to the principle that ignorance of the law is no excuse, because that principle relies upon the accessibility of the law for its justification.
In human rights conventions, the right to protection from retroactive criminal law is typically qualified by the proviso that the protection does not apply to acts or omissions which are criminal according to the general principles of law recognised by the community of nations.

Grimm's law on Encyclopedia.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
principle of relationships in Indo-European languages, first formulated by Jakob Grimm in 1822 and a continuing subject of interest and investigation to 20th-century linguists.
The first sound shift, affecting both English and German, was from the early phonetic positions documented in the ancient, or classical, Indo-European languages (Sanskrit, Greek, Latin) to those still evident in the Low German languages, including English; the second shift affected only the High German languages, e.g., standard German.
Grimm's law shows that the classical voiceless stops (k,t,p) became voiceless aspirates (h,th,f) in English and mediae (h,d,f) in German, e.g., the initial sounds of Latin pater, English father, German Vater, and in the middle of Latin frater, English brother, German Bruder.

Divine Law, Truth, And Cosmic Principle - World Scripture - Andrew Wilson
The laws of the universe are the basis of the Absolute--e.g., the Tao of Chinese religion which is the creative principle itself, or the Absolute Truth which is realized by the Buddha.
In some traditions, the law is a property of samsaric existence which must ultimately be transcended--e.g., the Hindu and Jain law of karma and the Buddhist doctrine of dependent origination.
This concise principle is often regarded as a summary statement of all ethics.

Recognizing and documenting this universal principle he called the "vital few and trivial many", Joseph Juran credited these findings to Pareto's work and thus it became known as 'The Pareto Principle'.
Because Pareto's initial discovery involved a distribution of 80% of wealth to 20% of families and it's inverse, the Pareto Principle is often called "The 80/20 rule".

EUROPA - Food Safety - General Food Law - Precautionary Principle
(Article 7) formally establishes the Precautionary Principle as an option open to risk managers when decisions have to be made to protect health but scientific information concerning the risk is inconclusive or incomplete in some way.
The precautionary principle is relevant in those circumstances where risk managers have identified that there are reasonable grounds for concern that an unacceptable level of risk to health exists but the supporting information and data may not be sufficiently complete to enable a comprehensive risk assessment to be made.
Such measures have to comply with the normal principles of non-discrimination and proportionality and should be considered as provisional until such time that more comprehensive information concerning the risk can be gathered and analysed.

I will argue that natural law, for Thomas, involves a chain of logical syllogisms, beginning with a highest moral principle, followed by more specific moral principles, and finally ending with a practical syllogism, the conclusion of which is an action.
In this sense, the synderesis principle is as meaningful as Mill's principle of utility.
The practical syllogism, then, dovetails with the syllogism involving laws of nations and is thus the concluding syllogism in the syllogistic chain which begins with the synderesis principle.
