The Law Society of Scotland is that body which in practical terms is set up by solicitors for the benefit of solicitors; in furtherance of that benefit for solicitors the Law Society for Scotland placates the public.
The Law Society maintains an unlimited guarantee fund to indemnify clients in the event of dishonesty by solicitors and a compulsory insurance scheme to compensate in cases of professional negligence.
She said the Law Society was in regular dialogue with the ombudsman’s office and issues such as whether it should have more powers and other matters were discussed on an "on-going basis to see where the system can be improved".

The Law Society of Scotland has climbed down on the eve of a court case to decide ownership of a domain it claimed was run by a cybersquatter.
When Mr Butler finally found a lawyer in Scotland who was willing to represent him against its own society (every lawyer in Scotland by law has to be a member of the society), we were unable to give a full picture.
However, the offer of £10,000 from the Law Society of Scotland (paid through their lawyers to a legal firm acting for Mr Butler as agents) and payment of his court costs made the point equally as adequately, he told us.

The Law Society of Scotland has just been confirmed as the new owner of Lawscot.co.uk, five days after it branded our story that revealed it has paid £10,000 for the domain "inaccurate".
The Law Society has been chasing the previous owner of the generic domain, Tommy Butler, through its own law courts to take hold of the domain, insisting that he was infringing its rights and the trademark that it took out after he initially refused to hand it over to them.
Perhaps the Society would like to provide a public statement as to why it spent so long and so much money chasing a domain when it is clear that a court of law would not rule in its favour.

 Law Society Of Scotland Facing New OFT Probe
The Law Society of Scotland's refusal to allow the payment of referral fees by solicitors is likely to come under the scrutiny of the Office of Fair Trading, it has emerged.
Bruce Ritchie, director of professional practice with the Scottish Law Society, revealed that the organisation had received a letter from the OFT in January suggesting that its insistence on maintaining the ban may restrict competition.
Separately, the OFT is also conducting a probe into the professional indemnity insurance Master Policy operated by the Law Society of Scotland on behalf of its members.

The Law Society of Scotland and Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) are delighted to launch the results of the biggest survey into women in the legal profession in Scotland.
Published today, Wednesday, 9 November, the excellent response rate, around a quarter of Scotland's 10,000 solicitors (2,300) shows how important the issues are and provides robust data to use as a launch pad for debate and action.
