Law of averages: Just the facts...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The law of averages is a lay term used to express the view that eventually, everything "evens out." For example: Two very similar people who drive similar cars in similar circumstances over a long period of time will have roughly the same number of accidents.
The formal mathematical result that supports the law of averages is called the law of large numbers ((statistics) law stating that a large number of items taken at random from a population will (on the average) have the population statistics).
However, it is important that while the average will move closer to the underlying probability, in absolute terms deviation from the expected value (The sum of the values of a random variable divided by the number of values) will increase.

Probability - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Some examples of epistemic probability are to assign a probability to the proposition that a proposed law of physics is true, and to determine how "probable" it is that a suspect committed a crime, based on the evidence presented.
In Cox's formulation, probability is taken as a primitive (that is, not further analyzed) and the emphasis is on constructing a consistent assignment of probability values to propositions.
A law of small numbers tends to apply to all such choices and perception of the effect of such choices, which makes probability measures a political matter.

 Law of Averages Help
In the middle, there is a graph named "Average." After each draw, the average of the draws is calculated (see the statistics table), and this average is plotted on the graph, where the horizontal axis gives which draw it is, and the vertical axis gives the average.
Average: The "Draws" entry gives the average of the draws so far, and the "Box" entry has the average of the tickets in the box.
The "Error" entry is the difference between the average of the draws and average of the box.

 The Law of Averages
The law of averages, or correctly named the law of large numbers, is one of the most misunderstood concepts of Mathematics.
Gamblers who believe in the law of averages will say that because heads has come up more in the past, and because of the law of averages, tails is more likely to come up in the future.
Related to the theory of the law of averages, but still quite interestingly different is the theory of “Regression to the mean”.

How to Outdo the Law of Averages
The law of averages may be a handy statistical device but it is only that.
Remember, the law of averages is merely a statistical device; it is not the gospel.
In conclusion, remember that the law of averages is really just a statistical device, not something that is laid down to control your life.

 The Law of Averages
The Law of Averages is a pseudoscientific doctrine, similar to a superstition, held by the common folk.
Some typical verbalizations of the Law of Averages are: "My number's about due to come up," or "My luck is bound to change." and faith in the law can lead to illogical behavior and incorrect conclusions.
Even the strongest believer in the Law of Averages would consider this an unlikely event A graph of the possible outcomes and their probabilities is shown below and the most likely number of different numbers to come up in 38 spins is 24, with a probability of 0.2048643366.

 Repeated Trials and Expected Values
The law of averages states that over repeated independent trials we will observe a value on average that is close to our expectation.
In statistics this is similar to the law of large numbers (as a sample drawn from a population gets so large as to be the population then the mean of the sample will have to be the mean of the population).
Standard deviations, remember, are the square root of the average of the squared deviations of observed scores from the mean.
