This was the gist of Governor Ben Evardone's statement during the press conference over Radyo Ng Bayan DYES on the occasion of their 16th anniversary.

Compared to the other islands, Samar has less number of plant species partly because its mountain landscape is lower in elevation compared to the other islands of Luzon (Dickerson, 1928).
The aim of this study therefore is to provide a listing of the seed plant species of Lawaan, describe the plant communities upon which these are found at different elevations and classify these communities according to their species attributes and importance values.
Out of 169 Lawaan tree species, 94 are in the Samar Island records of 478 tree species, the remainder of 75 are Lawaan tree species that are not in the said records.

QUINAPONDAN, Eastern Samar- It was a Sunday that the Catholic Church commemorated for the "Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ," but it turned out violent for this quiet town, 100 km from the capital town of Borongan.
Blood soaked the small road in front of the police station following a two-hour exchange of gunfire between some 20 fully armed communist rebels in fatigue uniforms and two policemen who stood their ground and repelled the attackers.
Matthew Aseo, chief of police of the neighboring Lawaan town, lost his 9-mm pistol when the rebels ransacked his house here.

BORONGAN, Eastern Samar — Samareños have claimed victory in their dogged struggle to preserve the island’s remaining forest, but for some of Samar Island’s precious natural wealth the success of the save-the-environment campaign came years too late.
Twelve years after the Philippine Pyrite Corp. ceased its mining operation in barangay Bagacay, Hinabangan, Samar, the Taft River in Eastern Samar remains a “dead river.” Until now no marine life survives in the river because of heavy pollution from the Bagacay mines upstream.
In Eastern Samar, these towns are San Julian, Arteche, Borongan, Balangkayan, Balangiga, Can-Avid, Dolores, Gen. MacArthur, Giporlos, Hernani, Jipapad, Lawaan, Llorente, Maslog, Maydolong, Oras, Quinapondan, Sulat and Taft.
