The LAWA is the German Working Group on water issues of the Federal States and the Federal Government represented by the Federal Environment Ministry.
The Working Group on water issues (LAWA) was set up in 1956 as an amalgamation of the ministries of the States of the Federal Republic of Germany responsible for water management and water legislation.
In order to fulfil these objectives, the LAWA has set up three permanent working groups and two adhoc-working groups to deal with different subjects of water legislation, hydrology, inland waters and sea conservation, ecology, flood prevention, coastal protection, groundwater, water supply, municipal and industrial sewage and handling with water polluting substances.

With such a long cohabitation with the Thais, most Lawa villages are indistinguishable from Thai settlements and most Lawa speak thai as their first language., but the Lawa language, related to that of the Wa Tribe of Burma, is still spoken in many villages.

The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 in order to train women's human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to advancing the status of women and girls upon returning to their countries (see LAWA Goals).
From August through May, the LAWA Fellows earn a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree at Georgetown with an emphasis on international women's human rights (see http://www.law.georgetown.edu/graduate/) and complete a major graduate paper on a significant women's rights issue in their home countries.
The relationships the LAWA attorneys build with their American contacts and government leaders, together with their legal training and enhanced computer research and technology skills, provide an invaluable advocacy network and the ability to draw upon expanded legal resources upon their return to Africa.
