The county was organized in 1843 and named for James Lawrence, naval officer known for his statement, "Don't give up the ship." Note that there was a previous Lawrence County, established in 1815 and dissolved in 1818, being divided into Wayne County, Madison County, and later into others, including this one.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,589 km² (613 mi²).
The racial makeup of the county is 95.68% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.67% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races.

The first courthouse of Lawrence County, a frame, two-story, 18-by-30-foot building, was constructed in 1846 and continued in use for many years (see Figure 1).
At the January term of the County Court in 1853, the court awarded a contract for a new courthouse.
This building served Lawrence County for more than 40 years until gutted by fire at the end of the century.

Dixie and Hushel died within minutes of each other, each of an apparent heart attack.    Their joint obituary was published on Thursday, November 21, 1985 in the "Lawrence County Record" (Lawrence County, Missouri):
Sexton was born May 30, 1911, in Lawrence County, and was a lifelong resident of the Miller area.    He was a disabled Army veteran of World War II.    He was a member of the Miller Christian Church.    He married Dixie Rose Henshaw in 1940 [November 16].
Sexton was born Feb. 28, 1918 in Lawrence County and was a lifelong resident of the Miller area.    She had been employed at the Recorder of Deeds office in the Lawrence County Courthouse for about 30 years until her retirement.    She was a member of Miller Christian Church.
