Lawrence County was formed on January 16, 1821 from the counties of Crawford and Edwards.
The county was named after Captain James Lawrence, who was mortally wounded in an engagement between his ship, the Chesapeake, and the British vessel, Shannon, during the War of 1812.
His memorable last words were "Don't give up the ship!" Lawrence County was the 20th county formed in Illinois.

He was one of the most conspicuous political figures in Illinois, and on account of his tenacity of opinion and firm adherence to democratic principles, he was regarded as a “wheel horse” in his party.
