Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota.
The county is divided into one township: St. Onge; and two areas of unorganized territory: North Lawrence and South Lawrence.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 13.70% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who were 65 years of age or older.

The discovery of gold here was made known in June 1875, and in February 1877 the United States government, after having purchased the land from the Sioux Indians, opened the place for legal settlement.
