George French (born on June 19,1841, at Roscommon, Ireland; died on July 7, 1921, at London, England) was the first commissioner of the North-West Mounted Police, serving from 1873 to 1876.
Herchmer, Lawrence William, Indian agent, police commissioner (b at Shipton on Cherwell, Eng 25 Apr 1840; d at Vancouver 17 Feb 1915).

In 1886, the appointment of a new Commissioner, Lawrence William Herchmer, resulted in a major reorganization of the Force.
Herchmer also established a plainclothes detective section in order to enforce the liquor laws more effectively and established a riding school at Regina.
Subsequently, Herchmer was criticized for the use of excessive force.

Prime Minister Macdonald responded by requiring Commissioner Lawrence William Herchmer of the NWMP to attend to the matter.
Commissioner Herchmer must have been confident that he could by himself settle matters in the Trench, but he realized that a permanent police presence would be required.
As he was preparing to depart on his mission, on May 20th Herchmer sent a message to Superintendent Steele at Fort Macleod ordering him to march his 75-man strong “D” Division cross-country to the CPR Mainline and catch a train to Golden.

LAWRENCE HERCHMER was the Chief Commissary for the 1872-74 Commission and went on to head the Mounted Police.
Although he wasn't personally popular and resigned under a cloud, he seems a more likely candidate for the source of the name than does a Fernie lawyer.
