  Lawrence Kasdan
Born in Miami Beach, Florida and raised in West Virginia, Lawrence Kasdan attended the University of Michigan with plans to become an English teacher.
Kasdan bounced back with the romantic comedy French Kiss (1995), starring Meg Ryan as a woman who wants to get her straying fiancé back at any cost, even if it means having to follow him to France.
Kasdan’s son, Jake Kasdan, has followed in his father’s footsteps, starting off as an actor in his father’s films The Big Chill, Silverado and The Accidental Tourist, then moving on to direct TV series such as Freaks and Geeks and Grosse Pointe, as well as the feature film Orange County (2002).

Lawrence Kasdan - Films as Director:, Other Films:
On the basis of relatively few films, Lawrence Kasdan has had a prestigious career as screenwriter and director, though one that is difficult to characterize easily.
Kasdan's visual style from film to film may be more difficult to characterize than his handling of genre and actors, though one may note consistently fluid camera movements and a determination to give each film a distinctive look and mood, while keeping a number of the same technical personnel.
If Kasdan is indeed settling into romantic comedy as his genre of choice, one might hope for more that are as graceful as his most recent films.

Kasdan's visual poetry draws us in to a world of separate images, forcing potential connections to jack-knife through the mind.
We see Kasdan is really speaking of how the life's randomness heightens the beauty of connections to others simply because life usually makes no sense and of the responsibility to light the candle for people simply because we grope in darkness ourselves.
Kasdan does not exude easy answers, but seems to nudge us, asking "what would you do?" as we realize how precisely his everyday, chaotic world mirrors our own and how many untapped choices might be right here with us the moment we finish watching his movie and begin our life.

Lawrence Kasdan has often been called a "genre man" and his filmography shows he's worked in a variety of genres, from Westerns (Silverado and Wyatt Earp) to dramas (The Accidental Tourist and Grand Canyon) to his latest release, the Stephen King horror/sci-fi tale Dreamcatcher.
KASDAN: I invited him to come to the set in British Columbia, and he just really wasn't up for that kind of a trip.
KASDAN: I think what's great about Stephen, and I think the reason so many of his things have been turned into films and TV mini-series is that somehow he hooks up two very important things.

 DEVELOPMENT - Reviews
In 1983 Lawrence Kasdan summed up the anxieties and morals of his generation in The Big Chill.
Using the Grand Canyon as an all-purpose metaphor for the divisions opening up in American society, Kasdan tries to address the state of the nation in a way few Hollywood film-makers have risked in recent years, and he's been rewarded with the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
The best explanation for this award is that the film seems more profound in a foreign language since the harder Kasdan tries to be serious, the more he falls back on platitudes.

Star Wars: Biography | Lawrence Kasdan
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Lawrence Kasdan had originally planned on a career as an English teacher.
However after winning several awards for writing several TV commercials, Kasdan tried his hand at screenwriting and eventually earned a credit as the co-writer for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
This success led Kasdan to script Raider of the Lost Ark. Later Kasdan went on to write and direct some of the most popular films of the 1980s and 1990s including The Accidental Tourist, The Big Chill, Grand Canyon and The Bodyguard.

Of particular value is Kasdan's candor in discussing the disappointments of his career, and his strict preference to direct his own screenplays rather than entrust them to another filmmaker.
This one-hour documentary includes engaging interview clips with Kevin Kline (a Kasdan regular), Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, and Dennis Quaid, but other clips (Meg Ryan, Kevin Costner) were clearly lifted from secondary sources (promotional interviews and such), and they're too brief to be of interest.
Taken as a whole, however, this look at Kasdan's career is comprehensive (up to 1995's French Kiss) and valuable for its extended interview with Kasdan himself--a gifted writer who has found his dream job in directing (and protecting) the films of his choice.

These colossal hits opened the door for Kasdan to do what he had always wanted to do--direct, and his initial effort seemed to herald the arrival of a major talent.
Kasdan's early strength, characterization, was now only a memory, as still more hip young actors in flat, underwritten roles paraded through a film that tried too hard to be a parody.
Co-written by Kasdan and wife Meg, the film received mixed reviews, being dubbed by some critics a "Big Chill for the 90s" and derided by others as mushy, superficial and unconvincing.

DREAMCATCHER - WIDESCREEN DVD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Based on the first King novel written after the author was smeared across a Maine highway by a man who would later kill himself in a trailer, the book is a fine short story trapped in the body of a six-hundred page book.
Like the book, the film is overlong (at a slow 135 minutes) and only really engages during its prologue, providing maddening glimpses of promising storylines and character moments tossed aside in favour of being a cut-rate adaptation of a cut-rate King novel.
Here, Kasdan says that, having written two Star Wars episodes, he was growing anxious to play with the toys that George Lucas gets to, but his unoriginal creature designs for Dreamcatcher suggest that it's not the technology that eluded Kasdan, but the last decade's worth of monster movies.
