Lawrence Sheriff or Lawrence Sheriffe (c1510-1567) was an Elizabethan gentleman and grocer to Elizabeth I who founded Rugby School.
Not much is known about Lawrence Sheriff's early life, but it is thought that he was born in the village of Brownsover, near Rugby Warwickshire.
Sheriff was apprenticed by his father to a London grocer named William Walcott, at which point he went to London.

In 1504 an attempt was made at establishing a rival school in the city, but the Bishop of Worcester at the time, Sylvestre de Giglis, passed a law that stated any person who set up a school in the city or monastic precincts would be excommunicated.
After a petition by some notable citizens of Worcester to endow the school permanently, the school was given a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1561 and a governing body known as The Six Masters (Six Masters: more facts about this subject) was set up, which remains as the governing body today.

In the volume The Landed Gentry, the authors claim that the family line stems from a Lawrence Sheriff, of whom Sir William Shreve is a nephew.
Sir William Sheriff, the first of the line of whom we have definite record, is believed to have been a nephew of Lawrence Sheriffe, who, in 1567, founded Rugby School, in England (Hornor, 348).
Hornor’s identification of the Shreve ancestry with Lawrence Sheriff supports the ancestry given in The Landed Gentry, except that the latter does not mention Oara Oara and says that William who married Elizabeth was born about 1587.

Northampton School for Boys are hoping to benefit from their success in last season's Daily Mail Schools Cup competitions.
