As a massive, square-jawed, grim-visaged leading man, Tierney cut an imposing figure on-screen; at RKO he landed supporting roles in such films as The Ghost Ship (1943) and The Falcon Out West (1944) before achieving stardom as the vicious gangster in Dillinger (1945), on loan to independent producers Maurice and Frank King.
In the 1980s Tierney, by now bald and rotund, made a rather remarkable comeback in a series of colorful character parts in films and TV (with a recurring part on "Hill Street Blues").

Tierney died in his sleep Tuesday at a Los Angeles nursing home.
But he is probably best known for the title role in the 1945 B-movie classic "Dillinger" and the leader of a group of killers in Quentin Tarantino's 1992 crime drama "Reservoir Dogs." Tierney's acting roles often mimicked his troubled off-screen life during the 1950s.
