On the north of the township is Arlington, on the south Hamilton, on the east Paw Paw, and on the west Hartford.
Their territory of exploration covered the present townships of Hartford, Lawrence, and Arlington, and when they entered upon their task of providing roads for a new country where roads had not been, and where water-courses, marshes, and swamps were no inconsiderable obstacles, they needed indeed all the vigorous energy and persistent industry at their command.
Lawrence township was organized in 1837, and included at that time the territory now occupied by Lawrence, Arlington, and Hartford.

Coldwater, now the county seat of Branch county, was then but a small settlement of pioneers, with ten or a dozen indifferent dwellings, a tavern, a rickety saw mill, with a store or two, and an Indian trading post on the bank of the river from which the place derives its name.
The then broad prairie in township six south, range six west, was swept by the wintry winds, and covered by the drifted snow, blown hither and thither by the northern blasts.

 A Brief History of North Lawrence
The Townsite of Lawrence appeared to be one of the principal targets of Southern sympathizers, perhaps primarily because it originally was organized to bolster the chances of Kansas remaining a free state in the event of civil war which already was on the horizon.
Hence, all of the vengeance was heaped upon it, while North Lawrence escaped entirely the disastrous effects of both the raid by Sheriff Jones in 1856 and Quantrill's raid of August 21, 1863.
Lawrence on June 11, 1867, signed by North Lawrence citizens, asking that North Lawrence be annexed to the City of Lawrence.

The log house and the lane enter the area on the west side of the road, as do the 480 acres which is part of the "Big Marsh." The nine acres bordering the road and Ackley Lake in Section 10 lies to the east side of the same road, the Bellevue-Marshall road.
The state of Michigan finally sold this last quarter to Isaac C. Crary on April 20, 1868, some 22 years after the rest of the marsh had been sold to private owners.
