Snorri's mother, Guthný, was the daughter of Bothvar Thortharson, who reckoned among his ancestors the redoubted fighter and great poet, Egil Skallagrímsson, as well as the lawspeaker and able skald, Markús Skeggjason; while on the spindle side she was likewise a descendant of Snorri the Priest.
That Snorri as a comparatively young man was elected lawspeaker for the Althing, the yearly general assembly, bespeaks the respect of his peers for his ability.
As the laws were not written to begin with, the lawspeaker's duties involved pronouncing the letter of the law in any case of doubt; and in Iceland, in particular, reciting the body of the law once a year before the assembled Althing.

The chieftains rejected the idea of a paramount leader, and instead decided, in 930, on a Commonwealth governed by a national assembly, or Alþing, which came to be held for two weeks every summer at Þingvellir in southwestern Iceland.
Here laws were recited by a lawspeaker so that everyone would know them, and disputes settled by four regional courts, with a supreme court formed early in eleventh century.
Legal settlement typically involved payment to the injured party or their family; the highest punishment was not death but being declared an outlaw, thus being exiled from Iceland.

Personality Traits: How Many?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
One personality trait which always seems to make its way onto any lawspeaker's hero sheet is some variation on Pedantic or Nit-picking, hence their tendency to get nutted by so-called "men of action" who want to accomplish things in their own particular...
Consider that an alternate way of handling this, is simply to consider the character's response to the personality trait in question, and then give the character their own relationship to represent this.
The problem with it, and why I might use the other method, is that it's a lot of extra recordkeeping that may become pointless when, for instance, the Lawspeaker bites it having been left to fend off that cave bear by himself.

At this first gathering of the Alþing a lawspeaker was elected to recite the laws each year, since writing had not yet begun.
As the name of the Law-Council, the Lögrétta,16 suggests, the purpose was to put the law right; the Lawspeaker would recite laws that he thought were relevant and amend older ones if he found it necessary.
In support of this claim I note that the Lawspeaker was required by law to consult with at least five knowledgeable people if he had any doubts as to what the law was or should be.
