Layyah District (Urdu: لیہ) is a district in the Punjab, Pakistan.
District Layyah (previously spelled as Leiah) is bounded to the North by Bhakkar District, to East by Jhang District.
The thesil of Layyah and Karor Lal Esan are comparatively better developed agriculturally but they have also large tracks of sand dunes and uncultivated land.

LAYYAH, Sept 21: Though the most backward district of the Punjab, Layyah has too many stakeholders in the political arena who devise their own strategies to make a ‘wining combination’ irrespective of what is the election policy of their respective parties in the rest of the country.
The father of district Nazim Shahabuddin, Bahadur Khan Seharr, is contesting from NA-181 on the PML-QA ticket against Faiz Swag of the PML-N, Musa Raza Shah of the PPP and Hafiz Rabnawaz of the MMA.
In PP-266, comprising Layyah city and adjoining rural areas, besides Asghar Gujjar, Fazal Husain Sumra (PML-QA), Abdul Shakoor Swag (PML-N) and three independent candidates — Ghulam Farid, Hafiz Jamil and Sanaullah Gujjar — are in the run.

ISLAMABAD: Drought has played havoc in the rain-fed areas of the country and district Layyah is no exception where 529 poor farmer families, living far away from the comfortable life of Islamabad, have been left all alone by the policymakers to fight against the forces of nature.
A big demonstration arranged by these poor growers in the area went unnoticed in the national media as they do not matter in the scheme of things and no one likes to read about their miseries and genuine demands.
According to a copy of presentation made by Sehiar to the prime minister, the Punjab Revenue Department is charging Rs 1,000 per acre from the growers in the Barani areas who cultivated grams on government land.

"At least eight people, including a minor girl Rafia, were killed in Sahiwal, Chiniot, Layyah and Kot Mithan Sharif while more than three dozen people injured due to caving in of their dwellings, hundreds of cattle heads have also killed in southern Punjab during last three days," the Flood Control Authority said on Saturday.
The Indus water was reported to be cutting the embankments in the Punjab area near Bhong Bund and according to the official sources, some 200 feet have already been slashed by the river at Bhong.

However, monsoon rains have lashed northwestern Pakistan and the central districts of Dera Ghazi Khan, Layyah and Rajanpur, said Chaudhru Nazir Ahmed, a government official.
He said floodwaters on Thursday inundated 70 villages in Layyah, about 200 kilometers northwest of Multan, a main city in the eastern Punjab province, damaging crops and forcing more than 50,000 people to leave their homes.
About 100,000 people have left their homes in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, other officials said, adding that troops in motorboats and wearing life jackets were trying to rescue marooned people and provide them with food and other necessities.

All the canals derived from Taunsa barrage were closed on emergency basis where the upstream discharge was recorded 5,22,322 cusecs, downstream discharge at Kalabagh was 3,93,962 cusecs, at Chashma barrage was 4,46,216 cusecs, inflow at Tarbela was 2,86,400 cusecs, outflow 2,60,100 cusecs with its level 1,517.66 ft.
Agencies add: Layyah DCO Nazir Ahmad Chaudhry said a breach was caused early Tuesday in the North-F protective Bund from a spot at its foot where a ‘Moga’ was plugged earlier.

Oxfam is distributing both cooked and dry food to 28,600 people in NWFP and Punjab, and has begun construction of latrines in Layyah.
Oxfam is also distributing hygiene kits, comprising toilet and washing soaps, soap dishes, petroleum jelly, nail clippers, and traditional sanitary napkins to 2000 families in NWFP and 3500 families in Punjab.

MULTAN/PESHAWAR, July 5: The recent swell in the mighty river Indus has played havoc in the remote Layyah district as dozens of villages have been inundated, causing displacement of thousands of people.
The situation has aggravated with a 100-foot breach occurring on Tuesday in the F1 north spur and the floodwater was reportedly hitting against the last embankment of the Layyah city.

According to Punjab relief authorities, over 190 relief centres have been set up in eleven affected districts where people are being provided with cooked and dry ration and also animal fodder.
Those most-affected included five districts of Bhakkar, Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzzaffargarh and Rajanpur from southern cotton belt of Punjab province, while one is that of eastern district of Sialkot bordering Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

The project will cover 200 of the poorest unions in Punjab that are dependent primarily on precarious rain-fed agriculture as their main source of income, and that have not yet been covered by a barani or area development project.
Among these are the 10 districts of Bhakkar, Chakwal, Gujrat, Jhelum, Khushab, Layyah, Mianwali, Narowal, Rawalpindi, and Sialkot.
About 70,000 more households belonging to poorer groups in the project area will be specially targeted for programs that foster group-income enhancing activities.

LAHORE: The Punjab Flood Relief Committee (PFRC) has declared 110 villages ‘disaster stricken’ after a survey of three flood-affected districts carried out by their district coordination officers (DCOs), said a PFRC statement on Thursday.
In a PFRC meeting chaired by Relief Commissioner Safdar Javed Syed, DCOs of Layyah, Khushab and Bhakkar said that 80 villages in Layyah, six in Khushab and 16 in Bhakkar were affected by floods.
The DCOs said that the recovery of revenue, agricultural and other taxes, and bank loans would be postponed in these villages.

DERA GHAZI KHAN, June 26: Up to 14 people were killed and over two dozen others were injured in a road accident in Layyah on Sunday morning.
