12.04.2002 - Richard Lazarus, UC Berkeley psychology faculty member and influential researcher, dies at 80
These experiments led Lazarus to establish the UC Berkeley Stress and Coping Project, in which he extended his ideas on the importance of appraisal to explain exactly what stress is and what coping involves.
Lazarus and Susan Folkman, his former student who is now on the faculty of UC San Francisco, argued that people suffer stress when they believe they lack the resources to deal with difficult events, but that they do not suffer stress if they believe that they have such resources.
Lazarus was the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, honorary doctorates from the University of Haifa and the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and in 1989, the Distinguished Scientific Contribution to Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association.

Lazarus was dead, and that he had died was unmistakably evidenced by the fact that his body was already corrupting.

Lazarus's poem   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In fact, Lazarus' sonnet to the Statue of Liberty was hardly noticed until after her death, when a patron of the New York arts found it tucked into a small portfolio of poems written in 1883 to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal.
Before her death at age 37, Lazarus grew from a sheltered girl writing flowery prose about Classical Antiquity to a sophisticated New York aristocrat troubled by the violent injustices suffered by Jews in Eastern Europe.
Lazarus' words, however, turned that idea on its head: the Statue of Liberty would forever on be considered a beacon of welcome for immigrants leaving their mother countries.

 FindLaw's Writ - Edward Lazarus
Lazarus evaluates the influence of Justices Alito and Roberts; considers the grounds for various critiques of the Court by politicians, academics, and others; and focuses in particular on the issue of law clerks' role on the Court, and whether it is too extensive, and too substantive.
Lazarus focuses in particular on the first decision authored by Alito, for a unanimous Court, in a death penalty case (one in which Lazarus was among the attorneys representing the petitioner).
Lazarus argues that leaving the decision whether to admit error -- or at least support reopening the case, or retrial -- to line prosecutors is too dangerous, given that recent examples have shown, and human nature suggests, that they are too invested in the convictions they have won.
