Rolands master-passions are daring and an exaggerated conception of honor, the extravagance of which is the cause of the disaster.
Roland was variously represented by the romancers as the son of Charlemagnes sister Gilles or Berte and the knight Milon dAnglers.
It was in Italy that the Roland legend had its greatest fortune: Charlemagne and Roland appear in the Paradiso (canto xviii.) of Dante; the statues of Roland and Oliver appear on the doorway of the cathedral of Verona; and the French chansons de geste regularly appeared in a corrupt Italianized French.

Some are good people wishing to be known for their good deeds, some are good people wishing not to be known as such — in keeping with Christ’s instruction not to let the left hand know what the right hand is doing) — and some are bad people wishing not to be known as bad.
If Roland preferred death to the prospect of a bad song being sung about him, his successors a millennium later look upon it with more equanimity — where they do not, like Herostratus, positively relish it.
Roland never knew what we have come to regard as almost axiomatic: that, to adapt a familiar saying, no song is a bad song.

They maintain that the "Chanson de Roland" was not as old as the battle of Hastings, and certainly Wace gave no sufficient proof of it.
The "Chanson" is so masculine that, in all its four thousand lines, the only Christian woman so much as mentioned was Alda, the sister of Oliver and the betrothed of Roland, to whom one stanza, exceedingly like a later insertion, was given, toward the end.
The "Chanson" had taken pains to show that the disaster at Roncesvalles was due to Roland's headstrong folly and temper.

One of the most unusual of French cinema's historical dramas, La Chanson de Roland tells a tale of heroism, faith and human suffering.
The film switches between a re-enactment of the exploits of a 10th Century knight Roland and a 12th century pilgrimage, a curious melange which illustrates the importance of folklore in medieval culture — past heroism somehow giving some sense to today’s otherwise meaningless existence.
