Le Chat Noir (French for "The Black Cat") was a famous 19th century cabaret in the notoriously bohemian Montmartre district of Paris.
It was opened on 18 November 1881 at 84 Boulevard Rouchechouart by the artist Rodolphe Salis, and closed in 1897 (much to the disappointment of Picasso and others who looked for it when they came to Paris for the Exposition in 1900).
According to Salis: "The Chat Noir is the most extraordinary cabaret in the world.

Dressed in a red shirt, fl velvet jacket, high boots, and a long red scarf, and using the stage name Aristide Bruant, he soon became a star of Montmartre, and when Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec began showing up at the cabarets and clubs, Bruant became one of the artist's first friends.

Welcome to the Best of New Orleans! Theater Review 01 11 05
Le Chat Noir, New Orleans' very own cabaret theater, tries gallantly to deserve the "cabaret" in its name, as well as the "theater." The room is on the biggish size, for a cabaret.
The original Chat Noir, which was the premiere "artist's cabaret," featured singers and dancers and musicians (no less a musician than Erik Satie at the piano!).
Anyway, Anna was at Le Chat Noir to catch her friend Karen's act.

 ChatNoir
Billed as "a Louis XIII-style cabaret, founded by a fumiste," the Chat Noir was established in November 1881 by the artist Rodolphe Salis.
Initially the cabaret was a small, two-room space with an imitation Rabelais-period interior but, within three-and-a-half years, its great popularity enabled the Chat Noir to move two blocks away into a larger and more elaborate home.
Adolphe Willette, Caran d'Ache, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen and, to a lesser degree, Henri Rivière and George Auriol, were the principal illustrators of the Le Chat noir during its heyday of the 1880s.
