Le Devoir - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Le Devoir is a French-language newspaper published in Montreal and distributed in Quebec and the rest of Canada.
Bourassa then created Le Devoir as an outlet for Quebec nationalism, the first issue appearing on January 10, 1910.
During the troubled 1930s, Le Devoir widely opened its page to now-controversial priest and historian Lionel Groulx and his followers.

Le Devoir is a Montréal NEWSPAPER started by Henri BOURASSA in 1910 as a pan-Canadian-nationalist, pro-French-Canadian, pro-Catholic, anti-British but independent newspaper.
Le Devoir is well known as a newspaper of opinion.
Its international coverage was excellent, based on the Agence France Presse (AFP) and Le Monde, but in an attempt to increase its audience in the early 1980s it expanded its economic and leisure content to the detriment of foreign news.

In the fall of 1990, an evening benefit for Le Devoir was attended by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Opposition Leader Jean Chrétien, Bloc Québécois Leader Lucien Bouchard, NDP Leader Audrey MacLaughlin, Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa, Party Québécois Leader Jacques Parizeau, the Mayor of Montreal and the Mayor of Quebec City.
Le Devoir was founded in 1910 by an independent-minded man named Henri Bourassa, who sat for a number of years in the House of Commons, first as a Liberal MP and then as an independent, in order to maintain his freedom of speech.
He did not want Le Devoir to be able to fall into the hands of anyone who might deviate from the purpose for which the paper was founded.

I think it would be unprecendented for Le Devoir, or any newspaper for that matter, to publish a correction in respect of facts contained in a letter to the editor.
Le Devoir sometimes published anti-semitic pieces in the 1930s, but it clearly has not been anything close to anti-semitic for a very, very long time.
Certain views expressed in Le Devoir in the 1930s were representative of certain segments of the society of the time and of the opinions of certain its readers.

He studied at Laval University and Montreal's École des hautes etudes commerciales, then entered journalism in 1935 at Terre de chez nous, a publication put out by a group representing farmers, the Union catholique des cultivateurs.
During his 1947-1963 reign as publisher of Le Devoir, Filion and his editorial crew — including and eventually led by his good friend André Laurendeau — pushed the paper to become the loudest critic of Duplessis's Union Nationale government.
