Le Hocq (Pronounced: Le Hock), area found in Jersey, Channel Islands.
Le Hocq is a Jersey-French name, and means 'The Headland' or 'The Cape' in English.
Just below Le Hocq Tower, west of the groyne of boulders, is a more pleasant sandy beach, which stretches round the headland to a very stony stretch of beach which reaches as far as Witches Rock and Green Island.

Nettle (ortchie) soup was once a popular dish and was considered a tonic for the heart.
Jersey wonders (les mèrvelles) a sort of rich twisted doughnut is made less in the home than formerly but is still a popular treat at fairs and festivals.

Above left is the martello tower at Le Hocq (1780), standing in a grassy area by the edge of the main coast road.
The picture above right is taken standing beneath the tower on Le Hocq beach - you can see the huge area of rock and sand exposed at low water, stretching far into the distance.
People visit the La Rocque / Le Hocq area of the island to view the scenery, sit on the beach and potter around rock pools.

Lapwings have dispersed, during the cold weather and a flock of 236 were feeding behind St Ouen's Pond on the 18th, with a further 30 seen at Les Landes.
Fieldfares on the other hand are very scarce with only 2 seen this month, but Redwings are still pletifull and they were heard moving at night on the 18th.
In the west of the island, 5 Marsh Harriers are still at St Ouen's Pond, along with 47 Shovelers, 34 Teal and a single Black Redstart at Le Pulec.

Pedestrian injury accident rates around Le Squez amount to 6 in the last 3 years as opposed to the area east of Le Rocquier where only one accident was recorded in Causie Lane.
Furthermore, the developer will be required to construct a new section of roadway at the northern end of the housing site to provide La Rue de Jambart with a new, safer junction with La Grande Route de St. Clement, thus considerably reducing the risk of further accidents at the flspot of the existing junction.
Beyond Pontac slip (toward Le Hocq), there is a short section of road without footpaths where houses are built right to the road edge on both sides of the road and where widening would be impracticable.

After decline and near-disappearance in the late 20th century, apple production is being increased and promoted.

One such site is Le Don Hudson, a strip of land situated between the coast and the road (Les Nouvelles Charrrieres de Bonne Nuit) overlooking the attractive Bonne Nuit Harbour in the north of the island.
Le Don Le Quesne is another small coastal site, situated on the island’s southern coast at Le Hocq and affording access to the beach.
This is a grassy triangle of land, complete with an ancient carved stone and several oak trees, lying between a road junction near St. Matthews Church in the Parish of St. Lawrence.

 Jersey Birds News - November 2004
A single Slavonian Grebe was present just offshore at Le Hocq and the colour-ringed Med Gull, C9T was seen again at Gorey Slip.
An English ringed Kestrel was found dead in Vallee des Vaux on the 31st and Merlins were seen on the 29th at Les Landes du Ouest and 31st at La Coupe, with a Peregrine at Le Pulec on the same date.
Lapwing numbers have increased with 85 at the sandpits and 25 at La Hougue Bie on the 31st, 160 on the 2nd, along with 6 Golden Plover, and 212 on the 4th.

The November meeting was a stimulating one, with discussion of the budget promoting some vigorous debate about a compilation of songs as a record of those presently available en Jèrriais and recent compositions adapted to well known tunes used by the students in recent years.
The major part of the meeting centred on finishing the remaining pages of our book "Les Preunmièrs Mille Mots" and congratulations to everyone present for the way each word was researched and discussed.
The Eisteddfod is the next event on the calendar, Monday and Tuesday, November 23rd and 24th at 7.30pm, La Salle Publique, St Martin, followed by our December meeting on Wednesday, December 2nd at 8.00 pm at Le Hocq, and the Annual Service at St. Andrew’s Church on Saturday December 5th at 7.30pm.

Around the little headland that marks the western-most point of Le Hocq bay is Green Island.
The area just along the road from here was a favourite haunt of Victor Hugo and other political refugees to spend their time in deep discussion.
A plaque at Le Dicq commemorates the spot where they would meet.

Volume II of "Old Jersey Houses" sugggests a date of 1740 to Les Burins.
Les Lumieres on La Route Orange is an Art Deco style house designed in 1932 by the architect Arthur Grayson, the building was derelict for many years until recently when it was purchased by a couple from Yorkshire who have added an indoor swimming pool to the listed building.

The Philippe Le Dain lived here for much of the 19th century his 8 sons (apart from the eldest who inherited the farm) went to sea, and his only daughter married Captain Daniel Messervy his sister married Mary married my GG Grandfather Edward Le Dain in London.
Photographs of Le Chalet this is a former hotel which has been left to rot away whilst planning permission is sought for luxury flats.
Buildings like this are common practice in Jersey, I am not sure why they do not make the owners demolish such eyesores.

A small sandy beach, a coastal defence tower, a good pub and plenty of parking encourage people to stop at Le Hocq.
While the sea in this area is not really suitable for bathing in, the view of Rocqueberg - where witches are told to have gathered in days gone by - and the grassy area beside the tower, makes Le Hocq a place to go, even if you are not a beach enthusiast.

Also, regarding the language, thank you very much to those who continued with Les Mille Preunmièrs Mots en Jèrriais at October’s meeting back at Le Hocq.
Les Sethées Jèrriaises at the Eisteddfod will take place on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th November at 7.30pm à la Salle Publique, St Martin.
December 2nd at Le Hocq Inn to practice carols, with Xmas refreshments as usual at 8.00pm (for the Service on Saturday)

Having fished at Fort D'Auvergne that morning, we went back to Chis’s place and grabbed some lunch, then straight off to Gorey to dig enough lugworm for the evening..
having done so, we then went and looked at some of the promising gullies around Le Hocq, really for future reference, with a mind to plugging for bass ….
Just got to be VERY careful of the incoming tide, with comes in at the rate of knots and easily cuts you off if your not careful …..
