Topic: Le Moustier

 [No title]
The Le Moustier 1 skull was briefly described in the early part of this century, but the sample of Neanderthals has increased dramatically since then, as has our understanding of the phylogenetic and functional implications of their morphology, factors which make a new detailed description and analysis of this specimen appropriate.
The preserved skull of Le Moustier 1 is composed of: the frontal, parietals, temporals and part of the occipital and sphenoid, the mandible, the palate, and most of the permanent dentition (the upper right incisor is missing and the deciduous left incisor is still a part of the tooth row) (Thompson and Bilsborough 1994, 1997).
Le Moustier 1 is an adolescent Neanderthal of about 15.5 years of age at death (by human standards of age determination) based upon the developmental status of the dental and postcranial evidence (Thompson 1995 a, b, in press) although it may be younger based on postcranial growth (Nelson and Thompson in press).

Before Farming: the archaeology and anthropology of hunter-gatherers
The remains of the Skeleton - Le Moustier 2 - were excavated from Level J of the Le Moustier Lower Shelter by Denis Peyrony in 1914.
Le Moustier 2 has been aged at no more than four months at death on the basis of its long bone dimensions and concomitant stature.
The re-allocation of these parts to Le Moustier 2 removes this possibility, although the relative completeness of Le Moustier 2 make it very likely that this neonate was indeed buried, albeit alone, in another space and time.

 Lost Neanderthanl baby discovered
In 1914, the remains were discovered in a rock shelter at Le Moustier, which is near Les Eyzies de Tayac in southwest France.
In a survey of the museum's collections, Maureille spotted bones that he reckoned must be the skeleton of Le Moustier 2.
He realised this because some of the bones were still encased in sediments with similar composition to those deposited by the Vézère River, which flows past the Le Moustier cliff.

However, a detailed re-examination of the skull fragments and available teeth of four juvenile Neandertals—the Pech de l’Aze, the Gibraltar child, the Engis child and the Le Moustier youth—reveals that Neandertal children did not develop like apes and were most likely slower in development than children today.
Each of the four pieces was traced and fitted together based on anatomical relationships: condyle in TM fossa, teeth in maximum centric occlusion (best bite according to normal cuspal patterns), normal Neandertal nasal airway (based on calculations of Pech de l’Aze, La Chapelle-aux-Saints, La Ferrassie 1, from the same area in France).
