We are introduced to the two heroes, Gregoire de Fronsac (Samuel le Bihan) and Mani (Mark Dacascos) in the midst of a torrential storm that culminates in the first of many magnificently staged fights.
De Fronsac represents the new rational world of the Enlightenment which is being forced to confront the backward, superstitious France outside of the capital.

Kinoeye | French horror: Christophe Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf
It is soon evident that de Fronsac represents a foreign intellect to this court, being labeled a "naturalist," fooling the group with a preserved "furry" fish from the cold waters of Canada and alluding to the lies present in Latin—a direct stab at Catholicism in the presence of a priest.
De Morangias' objection is to the alterations that de Fronsac caries with him—instead of faith and religion he possesses knowledge and reform, a dangerous combination for the aristocracy.
Ultimately de Fronsac leads the authorities to a meeting of the Pacte, and the masked figure draped in red velvet are revealed only to be the ineffectual and aging aristocracy, men and women who used the Beast to keep the peasants as obedient to them as they would be to God.

Le Pacte des Loups aka brotherhood of the wolf 2001 movie review by Jim Eadon
Le Pacte des Loups (English title - Brotherhood Of The Wolf) is a French movie that combines adventure; period costume drama; horror; cheesy matrix-stylised marshal arts and action.
Le Pacte des Loups is about an odd couple - a naturalist and a Red Indian, as the rather more boringly named "Native American Indians" were known until recently.
Le Pacte des Loups looks gorgeous, but it is a little too long for itself though (over 2 hours) and it never quite catches fire.

It sounds like a bad pun to say the audience was howling with laughter by the end of "Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups)," but that's what happened.
Early scenes of the pair leading explorations into the wilderness to track the creature and compiling descriptions from survivors of attacks is genuinely creepy, with credit going to cinematographer Dan Lautsten for the movie's eerie luminance.
"Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups)" is rated R for strong horror violence and gore and both male and female nudity.

April 18, 2002 -- "Brotherhood of the Wolf" (Le Pacte des loups) is sort of like a French version of "Jaws." It's a big, sprawling adventure yarn that's a lot more like a Hollywood film than a European film, except for the nudity and the people in fancy period costumes sitting around making polite conversation.
Samuel Le Bihan stars as Grégoire de Fronsac, a hunky libertine naturalist who comes to Gévaudan to study the beast, along with his Mohawk Indian pal from America, Mani (played by Mark Dacascos of "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" TV show).
Going along for the ride are Sylvia (Monica Bellucci), a courtesan, Jean-François de Morangias (played by Vincent Cassel of "Shrek"), a nobleman and his pretty sister, Marianne de Morangias (Emilie Dequenne).

The reason Gans cut the scene was that it was not how he wanted to portray his main character, Grégoire de Fronsac (played by Samuel Le Bihan) early in the film.
He wanted to conceal the fact that Grégoire de Fronsac is an action hero until later in the film, so the scene was cut to show the film's other star, Mani (played by martial arts expert Mark Dacascos) doing all the fighting.

dOc DVD Review: Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des loups) (2002)
In the realm of truly ambitious films that struggle to blend a variety of disparate genres together, Christophe Gans' near epic Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des loups) is no doubt one of the more successful, at least when it comes to simply making it all look good.
The screenplay for Brotherhood of the Wolf, by Stéphane Cabel and Gans, borrows liberally from historical fact, mixing actual and fictional characters into a reworking of the events, and the result is a speculative premise, based in part on fact, that is revealed ever so slowly during the film's nearly 2-1/2 hour length.
The king of France has sent naturalist/philosopher Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan, here looking a blond cross between Christopher Lambert and Brendan Fraser), a member of the Royal Garden, to investigate the attacks in Gévaudan, and he is accompanied on his journey by his stoic, martial arts savvy Mohican sidekick Mani (Mark Dacascos).

The Chevalier Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan), a suave nobleman with a taste for natural history, female companionship and rampant ass-kicking, arrives in the remote region of Gévaudan with his stoical sidekick Mani (Mark Dacascos), an Iroquois from Quebec.
They're there to hunt the Beast, an unknown predator that has been devouring locals -- mainly the aforementioned tight-bodiced females -- and is variously understood as a diabolical infestation or an attack on the authority of the king.
If all the church vs. state plot intrigue here is pretty murky (and what would an 18th century costume drama be without a mysterious papal emissary armed with various slow-acting poisons?), the point of "Brotherhood of the Wolf," at least for director Christophe Gans, seems to be the excruciating beauty of its moments.
