An Unnatural Disaster By June Thomas
Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Libération of France, Israel's Ha'aretz, Le Temps of Switzerland, Le Soir of Belgium, and Spain's El País all likened the results to an "earthquake." Le Parisien went with the simple headline "Shock," while La Repubblica of Italy said a "thunderbolt" had exploded over Europe.
Le Monde noted that only 40 percent of voters supported parties with representation in the National Assembly.
Le Pen's first-round success is mostly symbolic—no one believes he has any chance of becoming president, and Jospin's defeat should mobilize left-leaning voters in June's parliamentary elections.

At Le Monde, they criticize the directing duo of Jean-Marie Colombani and Edwy Plenel for giving up the serious and moderate tone that built the success of the "the newspaper of record" and pushing a catchy, even fluffy editorial tone.
At Le Figaro, journalists question the intentions of the new owner, businessman Serge Dassault, who is also a senator belonging to President Jacques Chirac's political party.
In 2003, the management at Le Monde and La Croix fired the authors of a book criticizing them, instantly considering it to be an act of high treason, even though the journalists had been working in their respective newsrooms for many years.

BBC News | EUROPE | Far-right triumph shakes French press
Newspapers from across the political spectrum however agreed that the left had contributed to its own downfall by putting up so many candidates, and splitting the vote to such extent that Mr Jospin was left without the backing needed to make the second round.
Le Monde agreed: "He never gave the impression of having mastered his campaign, which started off in the centre ground, ended on the left and was permeated by poorly calculated remarks, for examples those on the age of Jacques Chirac."
Le Parisien argues that Mr Chirac helped Mr Le Pen by putting so much emphasis on the theme of law and order - a theme which, after immigration, forms the central plank of Mr Le Pen's political manifesto.

Sport | Learning from Parisien fashion, but spare us the pink shirts
I know some English clubs were watching Saturday night's events on the other side of the Channel with an eye on just how Stade Français managed to fill Stade de France, and I know at least one Premiership club owner has spoken to Max Guazzini, the Stade president, to see what can be learned.
He began, I believe, with only 11 paying spectators when he became involved with the club more than 12 years ago: he has built up to 80,000 thanks to what he has offered the public on and off the pitch.
Things were already looking up in le championnat this season, with crowds up by almost a quarter over the first seven rounds and with even a club like Toulon getting over 10,000 regulars, but Saturday's milestone will increase the impetus again.
