This definitive version of the story of Martin Guerre (remade in English with Richard Gere and Jodie Foster as 'Sommersby'; and musicalised in a misguided version by Boublil and Schoenberg) is amongst French actor Gérard Depardieu's greatest roles.
As Bernadette de Rols, the wife seeking love and companionship, Nathalie Baye is superb; while a large and talented cast give flesh to the remaining characters.
Years pass and Martin returns in the shape of Gerard Depardieu who is able to assuage doubts about his identity via his wide knowledge of both Bertande and the neighbors.

Martin Guerre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Martin Guerre, a French peasant of the 16th century, was at the center of a famous case of imposture.
Martin Guerre was born around 1524 in the Basque town of Hendaye.
The new Martin eloquently argued his case, and the judges in Toulouse tended to believe his version of the story: that Bertrande was pressured to perjury by the greedy Pierre Guerre.

Sometime in the early 1550s a young peasant (Martin Guerre) from Artigat in Languedoc leaves his Pyrenean wife (Bertrande de Rols), son and inheritance to seek adventure in Spain as a mercenary.
Martin has a quarrel with Pierre, the patriarch of the Guerre family, over the management of the family estate and ownership of the rents from Martin's lands during his absence.
The Guerre family is sharply divided over the problem - Pierre and his sons-in-law believe the soldier's story, whilst Pierre's daughters (Martin's sisters) and Bertrande continue to believe 'Martin' is Martin.

The woman, Bertrande de Rols, whose unloving husband, Martin, leaves her in order to run off to war, accepts as her husband an impostor who shows up many years later pretending to be Martin.
She is poorly treated and finally abandoned by her husband, Martin, who later returns to collect his “property,” only to find that someone else has taken his place and, in Martin's eyes, stolen his property.
Le retour de Martin Guerre showed students a visual representation of the place of a woman in sixteenth-century French society as well as a depiction of a woman that seemed less superficial than those of women in the medieval and Renaissance texts studied in the course.

Film Review: Martin Guerre: What Le Retour de Martin Guerre Tells Us About Medieval Life
French film Le Retour de Martin Guerre (The Return of Martin Guerre) is one of the most famous "accurate" films about medieval life, but it has problems.
In 1538, Martin Guerre (Gérard Depardieu) was the fl sheep of a well-off peasant family.
To this day, historians have speculated about how aware she and other members of Martin's family truly were of the deception and what Bertrande's motives in particular were for accepting the impostor despite any possible doubts.
