The Town of Stafford is the only interior town in the county, lying in the eastern part of the county, east of Batavia, New York.
The town was first settled in 1798, one of the first of the towns in the Holland Purchase to be occupied.

Troxel was a sister of Gen. John B. Scott, one of the founders of Le Roy.
He, with his family, moved from Ottumwa, Iowa, and when the town of Ottumwa was started, it was named in honor of the town from which he came in Iowa.
He died near Ottumwa in 1859 Morgan Dix came to Coffey County in the spring of 1855, from Indiana, striking the Neosho River at Le Roy, and passing up the river by the way of Stubblefield's, he settled near Ottumwa early in the spring of 1855, and lived there until he died in 1874.

LE ROY, IL, June 14 (UPI) -- When Marguerite Salazar was a girl she heard stories about her tribe's life in central Illinois and the forced relocation of the Kickapoo in the 1800s from her grandparents and parents.
The Kickapoo were sent to Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Mexico after the Black Hawk War of 1832 and did not re-establish a presence in Illinois until 1998 when McLean County residents blocked plans for a mega-hog farm outside the town of Le Roy, population 3,200.
Landowners Bill and Doris Emmett welcomed the tribe back to land the Indians had occupied since the 1700s and opened The Grand Village of the Kickapoo Park, a non-profit one-acre site where native plants and grasses, and a herd of buffalo were to be restored.

For a great many years it has been a recognized proof of the town of Le Roy in Coffey County that in any general movement for the attainment of some worthy object in local public affairs the venerable editor, Frank Fockele, is found at the center or out in front leading the enterprise to success.
Fockele has been in many ways identified with the welfare and upbuilding of this town and his career is a most noteworthy one.
In 1881 he bought the Reporter at Le Roy, and has continued the ownership of that old and influential journal to the present time, though since 1908 the editorial responsibilities have been handled by his son Glick.
