LeSueur, Minnesota, a community of about 4,000, is located 50 miles Southwest of the Twin Cities on the National Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway.
Named after the French explorer, Pierre Charles LeSueur, the community is rich in history and tradition but has maintained a progressive outlook toward change and has been successful in its attempts to provide a high quality of life for all its citizentry.
LeSueur residents are positive and aggressive in pursuing what is best for the stability and growth of the community.
LeSueur is on the Minnesota River, which is a trickling stream compared to the glacial River Warren, which once flowed here.
LeSueur, named in honor of Pierre Charles LeSueur, a Frenchman who explored the Minnesota River Valley around 1700, started out as three small settlements named LeSueur, Middle LeSueur and LeSueur City, which were united in 1867 by the Minnesota Legislature.
LeSueur was designated as the county seat of LeSueur County, a spot it held until 1875.
LeSueur is located in the Minnesota River valley, and is popularly known as the "Valley of the Jolly Green Giant" because this very fertile rural area was the home of the "Green Giant" company, one of the most widely recognized consumer brands for canned and frozen vegetables in the USA.
Although LeSueur is a small town (population 4000), this uncongested rural location can draw people from a much larger travel-to-work area.
The LeSueur area is roughly 50 miles southwest from Minneapolis along highway 169 to Mankato, which is 25 miles farther south.
LeSueur has recently been seeking designation as one of ten new Job Opportunity Building Zones (JOBZ) to be created in January 2004 as authorized by the Minnesota Legislature in 2003.
It is not surprising that various food processing and packaging companies lead the industrial base of LeSueur, including operations of Cambria, Davisco Foods, Michael Foods, Seneca Foods, and Technipac.
Another interesting historical note is that LeSueur was the home of Dr. W.W. Mayo and his sons, who set up the world famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, which also provides healthcare services today throughout the region.
