However, with Le voyage dans la lune—his account of the pioneering journey to the moon undertaken by the intrepid Professor Barbenfouillis and his companions, and of their adventures with the Selenites—he surpassed all previous lunar spectacles, creating new standards in film entertainment, and in so doing accelerated the trend towards more sophisticated studio-based productions.
For the return of the spaceship to Earth a series of different scale models was used in a rapid montage sequence, while the scenes of the craft dropping to the ocean floor and the subsequent rescue exploited the resources of an aquarium.

Animation Room: Le voyage dans la lune (A Trip to the Moon)
Méliès best-known film is Le voyage dans la lune (usually translated as A Trip to the Moon).
A Trip to the Moon is often cited as the first ever science fiction film, although anything involving the Man in the Moon, cameo appearences from Greco-Roman deities and a guy falling from the Moon and into the Earth's sea (and surviving!) is going to provoke commetns from SF purists.
Méliès does, however, lift freely from contemporary science fiction authors: the spacecraft is launched from a cannon, as in Jules Verne's "De la Terre à la Lune" ("From the Earth to the Moon"), while H.G. Wells' "The First Men in the Moon" provides the Moon's inhabitants, the Silenites.

Le Voyage Dans la Lune is Georges Méliès' most famous film, very loosely based on the novel by H.G. Wells.
The Smashing Pumpkins made a video in the '90s as a loving lampoon of the film's visual style, which deals almost entirely in stylized sets, exaggerated depth perspective, and the talents of the numerous vaudeville personalities Méliès used in his films.
As a template for what was to come in the next hundred years, and simply as an entertainment, Le Voyage dans la lune is a cinema landmark, and still immensely entertaining and influential.
