LeRoc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
LeRoc is a form of Modern Jive, the generic dance style that derived in the 1980s from dances including Swing, Lindy Hop and Rock and Roll, the main innovation being to simplify the footwork.
Unlike franchised variations of Modern Jive such as Ceroc and Le Jive, LeRoc is not a commercial business but a generic term.
As implied by the title of the Federation, the dance style came from France, where Swing / Rock and Roll dancing had not been so suppressed by the onslaught of Disco.

 Spotlight on LeRoc
LeRoc was promoted extensively during the 1980's disco era through specialised London clubs, such as LeRoc, Ceroc and Cosmopolitan Jive.
Eventually, as LeRoc committee members returned to their home countries, married or generally disbanded, LeRoc was taken over by Michel Ange Lau and his two brothers, Louis and Richard.
The ideal organisation to achieve this was the LeRoc French Jive Federation, which rose to the task and produced a syllabus and definitive LeRoc Manual.

Leroc's samples are well-arranged, funky relics that intersperse themselves over bappy bass synths, satisfyingly fuzzy drum loops, and quirky samples of French dialogue that make fun of suave, slick modern songs.

The reason for the difference is two-fold: women have often been to dance classes before and so have more dance experience; secondly the men have to lead the dance which entails a more thorough understanding of the moves.

Ceroc History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Ceroc, LeRoc, and Cosmopolitan Jive were the early London clubs promoting the new dance style based on French partner dancing.
It is still often referred to as ‘Modern French Jive’; (though not particularly ‘French’) to distinguish it from older forms of jive and especially Ballroom Jive –; a formal competition style of Jitterbug-based dance or ‘American Jive’; which is included in the Latin and American sections of competition ballroom dancing.
Christine Keeble, a competition winner in Brittany, pushed LeRoc forward but there was plenty of interaction between the two groups, neither of which were profit-making enterprises, and both of which popularised the new dance with cabarets.

The Leroc style of dance began around the time of the Second World War, when American GIs decided to dance, in order to pass the time, while they were stationed in Paris.
At the time, the dance was probably more reminiscent to other, more well-known forms, such as the Jitterbug and Lindyhop and only consisted of a limited number of moves.
