The government leader's counterpart on the Opposition benches is the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.
Early Canadian cabinets would include several Senators who would be answerable to the Senate for government actions and in the nineteenth century it was not considered unusual for a Senator to be Prime Minister as was the case with Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott and Sir Mackenzie Bowell.
In 1969 the position of Leader of the Government in the Senate became an official cabinet position with the appointment of Paul Joseph James Martin.

The Senate will have to sit as many as 15 extra days this summer, at a cost of about $85,000 a day, in order to pass the Liberal government's budget measures and the law allowing same-sex marriage across Canada.
Senator Serge Joyal, also from Quebec, said working as late as August might actually be good for the health of his colleagues.
He says the Senate could have chosen to deal with the bills in the fall, though that might have been dangerous for Paul Martin's government.
