Topic: Leader of the Opposition Fiji

Leader of the Opposition (Fiji) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It did not originate in Fiji but has a long tradition; in British constitutional theory, the Leader of the Opposition must pose a formal alternative to the government, ready to form a government himself should the Prime Minister lose the confidence of the House of Representatives.
In addition, the Leader of the Opposition chooses 8 of the 32 members of the Senate, Fiji's upper house of Parliament, and has the right to be consulted about the appointment of the Chief Justice.
In Fiji, the Leader of the Opposition is formally appointed by the President.

Amid numerous signs of mounting popular opposition to the racialist coup headed by disgruntled businessman George Speight—as well as international pressure to keep Speight out of office—Fiji's martial law administration has suspended talks with Speight and his group and demanded the release of their 31 hostages.
Of mutual concern to Speight, the military and the capitalist powers is the danger that rising opposition to the coup could spark wider discontent among the increasingly impoverished Fijian population.
One journalist who drove from the capital Suva to Nadi, the commercial, tourism and sugar centre on the west of the main island, reported road signs such as “George [Speight] is a terrorist and belongs in prison, not in the position of Prime Minister”.
