The Attorney- General, who must have been qualified for at least five years to practice as an advocate, shall be the principal legal adviser to the Government of Belize and shall also be responsible for the administration of legal affairs in the country.

Ashcroft made large donations to the People's United Party of Belize (PUP), estimated in the area of $1 million, while they were the opposition party.
Ashcroft's Bank of Belize was also granted the exclusive right to set up off-shore companies in the country for UK and US citizens.
