On 17 November, the League of European Research Universities (LERU) announced that it is expanding its membership to include the Universities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Lund, Paris-South, Zurich, and University College London.

A November 2005 European Union report, “The Brain Drain—Emigration Flows for Qualified Scientists,” says an exodus of European scientists and researchers to the United States that began in the 1950s is worsening.
European academics began noting the brain drain in the 1950s, and the term caught on after it was used in a 1963 study by Britain’s Royal Society.
Meanwhile, Joost J.A. van Asten, managing director of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), says he’s seen nothing in the more than two years since the release of the EU report that would lead him to conclude that things were improving.
