WALES (CYMRU): The words “Wales” and “Welsh” are not Celtic at all, but stem from the Anglo-Saxon word for “foreigner” applied to the redoubtable Celtic fighters that the conquering Saxons were unable to dislodge from the mountainous terrrain that became today’s Wales.
The traditional border of Wales was defined in the early Middle Ages when a frustrated Saxon ruler caused a boundary ditch to be dug between the Welsh and the Saxon lands.
Though Wales’ independence was beset by Norman incursions into the south of Wales, Wales held out until 1282, when Llywelyn, the last true native “Prince of Wales” was killed by the English.

 Welsh Premier League :: Wales
The league suffers from the fact that six of the largest football clubs in Wales — Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham, Newport County, Methyr Tydfil and Colwyn Bay — all play in the English football league system.
This scenario is virtually unprecedented in Europe, but in spite of this clear disadvantage, the Welsh Premier League continues to survive, despite average crowds being comparatively low at around the 300 mark.
The League normally provides three teams for European club competitions (though they invariably do not progress far) -- the League Champions are entered in the UEFA Champions League, the runners-up in the UEFA Cup, and the third place team in the Intertoto Cup.
