Dick Smith was looking for ballast for a strange mail permit he and Leah were using for fannish mail, and had volunteered to take my books to Chicago when they went home, for mailing later.

Michael Marshall Smith's novel Only Forward, published by Bantam Spectra, won the Philip K. Dick Award for distinguished science fiction, given to a 2000 book published for the first time in the United States as a paperback original.
Smith won a certificate and a check for $1,500.

However, medicine summoned me and I went downtown, where all the lights are bright, to have the mysteries of my ileum probed.

I was on Mike Resnick's panel of contributors to the
anthology along with Bruce Pelz, Tom Veal, Tony Lewis, Leah Zeldes Smith and Dick Spelman.
Resnick said the book was conceived in the CFG Suite at ConFrancisco while people were bitching about the con, one insisting a case could be made that Zagreb, even then being bombed, still would have produced a better con.

 Richard Chwedyk: Previous Notes
Capricon — I just stopped in to do a panel on "Who Writes Wonder Wonderfully?" The day before, I took a few minutes and put together an exhaustive list of authors and books — and then referred to it no more than a couple times during the panel.
My panel mates were Jeffrey Liss, Richard and Leah Zeldes Smith and Beverly Friend, who may also have made up their own extensive lists, none of which were more than touched upon.
We had a lively audience and they kept us on our toes.
