Leakage inductance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leakage inductance is that property of an electrical transformer that causes a winding to appear to have some self-inductance in series with the mutually-coupled transformer windings.
Leakage inductance is primarily caused by the design of the core and the windings.
Leakage reactance is also used for some negative resistance devices, such as neon signs, where a transformer action is required as well as current limiting.

The standard transformer had leakage inductance ~.5 mh and the bifilar was ~.16 mh.
The primary inductance was slightly higher for the bifilar transformer (~5-10%) and the secondary inductance was unchanged.
The leakage inductance is effectively in series with the primary so the main concern isĀ  its value at 20k.

Thus, the leakage inductance results from magnetic fields in the air (because fields in the core couple both the primary and secondary windings).
Leakage inductance is caused by a magnetic field that links one winding but not the other.
Another problem with leakage inductance is the large voltage generated when the current changes quickly, as it does in the transformer of most switching power supplies.

Two-wire electronic dimming ballast for gaseous discharge lamps - Patent 4392087   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
According to the present invention, a tuning capacitor is located in the secondary and the transformer of the ballast is constructed in a manner which harnesses the natural leakage inductance in the secondary such that both the inductance and capacitance normally on the primary side are on the secondary side.
The secondary leakage inductance in conjunction with the tuning capacitor provide tuned sine wave output to the fluorescent lamps at the operating frequency of the inverter throughout the dimming range of the tubes.
The technique contemplates eliminating the necessity of using additional expensive inductance components in the ballast system such as the choke coil by taking advantage of the natural leakage inductance of a modified transformer which is substituted for and functions in the same manner as the external inductance of the choke coil.

Ignition Coil — Tech — Terms & Definitions - Hot Rod Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
The property of a coil that allows voltage to be induced is called inductance, and inductance is the principle upon which hundreds of millions of ignition systems have been built over the years.
Inductance is measured in a unit called the "Henry." Most automotive ignition coils, from purely stock to full-on racing units, are rated at between 4 and 10 thousandths of a Henry, called 4 to 10 milliHenrys (abbreviated 4mH).
Thus, as you change the shape of the spark in the combustion chamber by altering the leakage inductance of your coil, you are also introducing a change in the ignition timing itself.

 Power Transformer Attenuates Harmonics
Leakage inductance between the primary and secondary windings in all transformers already functions as a first-order low-pass filter.
Previously, leakage inductance and interwinding capacitance were viewed as a byproduct of the design of line-frequency transformers, a function of spacings and dielectrictics.
The combination of the leakage inductance with the transformed capacitance from secondary to primary (C) and the primary dc-resistance (R) acts as a second-order low-pass filter.

diyAudio Forums - toroid for car amp smps
Leakage inductance using a toroid can be an issue depending on the core shape and number of winding turns.
Leakage inductance with ferrite toroid transformers is about the same obtained with EI or EE standard cores, provided the same core materials and sandwitching winding techniques are used, but it's almost imposible to get perfect sandwitching in a toroidal core so coupling tends to be worse
Lowest leakage inductance is obtained when all winding are as close to the core, and as close to each other as possible.

Since the leakage inductance is miniscule compared to the mutual inductance (and the primary resistance will typically also be low compared to the inductive reactance of the combination), this is close to the input voltage.
The secondary leakage inductance and secondary resistance are unchanged.
The point, though, is that the "leakage reactances" in series with the output current in the model are small compared to the secondary resistance (and to the mutual inductance and thus the measured coil iductance).

This procedure for leakage inductance reduction is the one generally used in audio transformers for expanding band pass to the high frequencies.
It is still possible to decrease leakage inductance by decreasing number of turns in windings, which is possible with higher permeability cores.
When designing push-pull output transformer, care must be taken of the leakage inductance between the two half-primaries (it can be obviously computed the same way as primary-secundary leakage).

Leakage inductance between the primary and secondary windings of the transformer is a real problem in switchmode power supplies.
The spike voltage is dependent on the value of the parasitic circuit capacitance's, and the value of the leakage inductance of the transformer.
If the leakage inductance values are large, the amplitude of the spike will be high, and could exceed the voltage withstand capabilities of the switch.

Electric power engineering - Toroidal transformer leakage inductance
You can calulate the leakage inductance of a toroidal transformer with primary and secondary wound in two layers (and not on separate sectors of the core) using the same equations as for EI-cores when you substitue the length of the leg by the mean circumference of your toroidal core.
Because of this basic difference in design, the leakage inductance for an EI design transformer is normally many times greater than a toroidal design of the same VA rating.
The leakage inductance is a function of the primary and secondary winding proximity, mag length, core geometry & Bmax etc. and I just can't seem to find any references to toroidal geometry in works on the subject.
