The Leander Rowing Club is based in Henley-on-Thames, and is the oldest rowing club in the world.
Founded in 1818 in London, the club moved to Henley in the late nineteenth century.
For the first 179 years of its existence, it was a men-only club, but in 1998 opened its doors to women members, partly prompted by financial considerations, as the UK's Sports Council rules required organisations receiving funding to have an open membership policy.

In the Hellespont we saw where Leander and Lord Byron swam across, the one to see her upon whom his soul's affections were fixed with a devotion that only death could impair, and the other merely for a flyer, as Jack says.

REGATTA OnLine - News and Features
Although the oldest rowing club Leander has been based at Henley for a hundred years this year it was rowing on the Thames Tideway from Lambeth at the time of the first Henley Regatta in 1839.
The club did not participate in the inaugural regatta but rowed up from London to see what it was all about, stopping overnight en route, possibly at Maidenhead or Eton, to arrive at Henley drenched with rain, at 11 o'clock.
Leander, rowing in the final as the holders, were less altruistic.

Leander handed Boston University’s varsity eight a loss by a third of a length to set the stage for the finals.
While a strong wind the previous day against BU had prevented Leander from gaining a sizeable advantage thanks to an increased base cadence off the start, with calm conditions against Harvard, the British crew had little difficulty staking itself to a huge early lead.
