Her activity was controversial enough that the Bradford County (Florida) Board of Education forced her, when she was Miss America 1993, to delete the word "AIDS" or any other reference to the disease from her presentations to county schoolchildren (even as Florida ranks third in prevalence of AIDS cases in the U.S.).
