His Learjet design was based on the wings and basic structure of a short-lived Swiss fighter plane, the P-16.
The Learjet name lives on in the 30, 50, and 60 series, which are larger, more efficient, and safer.

The original Learjet accumulated 194 hours of flight time in 167 test flights until it was destroyed in June 1964 when it crashed at takeoff with a Federal Aviation Administration pilot at the controls.
The Learjet 23 became the first small jet aircraft to enter mass production as well as the first to be developed and financed by a single individual.
Unfortunately, the original Learjet 23 also developed an unwanted reputation as a very demanding and unforgiving aircraft for the average pilot to fly—a major factor in the strategic decision to quickly design a successor.

 AvBuyer.com - Aviation Articles - LEARJET 40 & 45 UPDATE
The Learjet 40 for sale descended directly from its larger sibling, the Learjet 45 which itself broke new ground for Learjet as the first all-new design from the company since the first Model 23 way back in 1963.
The Learjet 45 for sale sported an all-new fuselage designed to yield a cabin with dimensions beyond those of the prior light-class Learjets, such as the high-speed, low-cost Learjet 31A, the 35, 25, 24 and, of course, the 23.
Learjet’s designers and the company’s development partners also collaborated on an all-new wing; one that greatly reduced the number of parts that, in turn, brought about lower assembly time.

What ASTECH Has Done On Learjets
We helped establish the RTS methodology at Learjet by creating the formats, guidelines, and templates that all RTS procedures would use (as well as review most of the electrical/avionic RTS procedures that were generated).
Each system that we generated RTS procedures for was extensively researched (Learjet design/ test/ maintenance/ safety documentation, vendor documentation, Technican/ Vendor discussions, lessons learned, undocumented tips, shortcuts,....) so that we completely understood the system from all perspectives and at all levels (hardware/software, system-subsystem-component level, operationally,...).
We also worked closely with Learjet Tech Pubs to ensure that the RTS procedures made it into the maintenance manuals correctly-- this is much harder than it sounds.

ORLANDO (AP) — Learjet should not be held responsible for the 1999 plane accident that killed golfer Payne Stewart, jurors said Wednesday.
His widow, Tracey, and their two children sued Learjet, claiming a cracked adapter caused an outflow valve to pull away from the plane's frame, resulting in a decompression and the escape of cabin air as the plane climbed to its flight altitude after leaving Orlando on Oct. 25, 1999.
Attorneys for Learjet told the jury that the plane lost pressure in another way and that damage to the valve was caused by the crash.
