In 1886 the French Army introduced the Lebel Model 1886 using smokeless powder, allowing smaller diameter rounds to be propelled at higher velocities, with accuracy out to 1,000 yards; most other military rifles became obsolete.
Turkey purchased the Model 93, Brazil and Sweden the Model 94, and the similar Model 95 was sold to Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, China, Iran and the South African states of Transvaal and The Orange Free State (Boers).
Model 1934 is virtually identical to the 1914 except the grip which was made of wood, fl hard rubber and after 1938 brown plastic.

Rifles with original German stocks have "7.62" burned into the heel of the rifle stock for identification and to separate the re-chambered Kar98ks from the original 7.92 mm versions of the weapon then in service or held in reserve, though some 98k rifles were fitted with new, unnumbered beech stocks of recent manufacture.
The Kar98k rifle was used by the reserve branches of the Israeli Defence Force well into the 1960s and 1970s and saw action in the hands of various Israeli Army support and line-of-communications troops during the 1967 Six-Day War and the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.
As of 2005, the Mauser Kar98k rifles that were captured by the Soviets during World War II and refurbished during the late 1940s and early 1950s have appeared in large numbers on the military surplus rifle market.

The Lebel was the standard bolt action rifle of the French army from 1886 until 1916, it incorporated many advanced features for its day, except for its magazine.
In service the Lebel proved somewhat fragile (to some sources) compared to some other rifles of the period, but was nevertheless a major advance on fl powder rifles and its features were widely copied by later designs.
Rifling, which first made an appearance in the 18th century, is the process of making grooves in gun barrels for increased accuracy and range.

The single-shot, bigger-bore rifle was the subject of extensive research and development in the latter portion of the nineteenth century, with the result that the major powers introduced new models that were small-bore, bolt-action weapons capable of firing multiple rounds from a spring-loaded clip inserted into a rifle magazine.
The infantry aside, the rifle was a crucial element of the sniper's armoury: along with a human observer, that is.

Rifled muskets and handguns began to replace smoothbore military weapons in the mid-1850’s after a French Army officer, Capt. Claude Minie, developed a means to expand a bullet upon firing to cause it to fit the grooves of a rifled barrel.
Breech-loading rifles firing self-contained cartridges appeared in the 1860’s, and some were used during the U.S. Civil War (e.g., the Spencer carbine and the Henry rifle).
Of course, graduated sights had existed on both smoothbore and rifled muskets for many years, but the elevation marks on the sights had been determined by firing tests of these weapons with a specific projectile at a specific muzzle velocity, at a specific altitude, and with a specific set of weather conditions.

Later, in 1893, the Lebel rifle's bolt was slightly modified leading to change the designation of the original Mle 1886 infantry rifle to: " Fusil Mle 1886-M93 ".
Ironically it was this design lengthened to rifle length which came in as an adjunct to the Lebel rifle in 1915 (the Mle 1907-15 Berthier rifle).
The Lebel remained the rifle of choice used by the French Foreign Legion, until the adoption of the MAS Mle 1936 rifle.

In contrast with other bolt action military rifles, the bolt design is complex, the safety is not easy to apply or disengage, and the overall feel is somewhat awkward, at least until one gets used to it.
The two easiest clues that a rifle is Finnish is the marking "SA" in a square box stamped on the breech end of the barrel.

In 1886, the French Army unveiled the Modelle 1886 “Lebel” rifle.
Now, the Lebel, which used a tubular magazine located under the barrel was not a particularly noteworthy design, but the power and flat trajectory of the new French 8mm round far outclassed the 11mm Reichspatrone fl powder round used in the contemporary German infantry rifle, the Mauser 71/84.
Field trials for the new rifle were completed in November, 1888, and the GPK recommended that it be adopted immediately.

The 8mm Lebel (based on the earlier 11mm Gras necked down to accept.323" bullets) marks the beginning of the period of the small bore military cartridges designed for use with smokeless powder.
The Lebel's huge rim and ungainly shape made it poorly suited for use in weapons with a detachable box magazine, so in 1929 the French introduced the 7.5x54 MAS, a modern rimless cartridge, for use in their machine guns.
In 1934 they began adapting the Model 07/15 and M16 bolt action rifle for the newer cartridge (a slow and involved process), and in 1936 they saw the light and adopted the MAS 36 service rifle (another bizarre design!) in 7.5x54.
