  Rifles And Light Machine-Guns - LoveToKnow 1911
Some of these units with their guns were engaged in the battle of the Somme 1916 but apparently the result, in the trying conditions of the trench-warfare battle, was not very successful.' Tests have been made of the Madsen gun at different times in the British and United States armies.
Guns of this weight, however, though they might be sufficiently mobile for trench warfare battles, were evidently too heavy for the more open warfare of 1917 and especially 1918, and a new and lighter model called the 08/18 was brought out.
The gun fires when the bolt reaches its forward position as the striker projects through the face of the bolt, and is cocked when the mainspring is compressed and the bolt drawn to the rear.

 Divisional Machine Guns
Machine gun companies that were attached to infantry battalions designated as division or brigade reserve for a particular mission were usually placed under direct command of their respective brigade commanders, to fill gaps of fire and to protect the brigade flanks.
When in the former role, the guns were placed to cooperate with the field artillery units in neutralizing suspected enemy observation posts and machine guns during the attack and to sweep the approaches for possible enemy counterattacks after the capture of the final objective.
When they employed their guns in that fashion, the machine gun officers often ran into opposition from the rifle company commanders, who preferred to have the guns farther forward, fearing that their infantrymen would be at risk of stray low rounds as they advanced under the overhead machine gun fire.

Vickers machine gun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The gun was fitted with interrupter gear to allow it to fire through aircraft propellers, and slots were cut in the water jacket so that it was cooled by air flow instead.
As the machine gun armament of fighters moved from the fuselage to the wings in the years before WW2, the Vickers with its cloth belts was replaced by the Browning Model 1919 with metal clips in some aircraft, especially fighters.
The gun was 3 feet 8 inches (1.1 m) long and its cyclic rate of fire was between 450 and 600 rounds of ammunition per minute, with a range of approximately 4,500 yards (4,100 m).

The gun was much lighter (9 kilos) than the portable "light" machine guns of the period, such as the Maxim Mle 1908-15 and the Lewis gun.
As a result, the Chauchats in 8mm Lebel continued to be used by the A.E.F. until supplies of the newly manufactured Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) were allocated sparingly and late, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive (September 1918).
The venerable 8mm Lebel round, which was one of the major handicaps of the CSRG, had been discarded for a 7.5mm rimless cartridge resembling a necked down 7.92mm German Mauser round.

 USCA1 Opinion
Boulanger bases this argument on the fact that the police did not find a gun on him when they stopped him on the railroad tracks shortly after the robbery, and on the fact that the informant told the police that the gun he saw in the apartment was fake.
Regarding Count II, Boulanger argues that neither Lebel nor Baron were able to positively identify the firearm found in the apartment as the firearm used in the robbery and that, at best, the evidence merely established that a robbery was committed with what appeared to be a firearm.
Although Lebel and Baron originally told the officers that the man was between 5' and 5'4" tall, they testified differently, and it was up to the jury to resolve this discrepancy.

The problem with the machine guns is that they would frequently overheat, so then a water-cooled machine gun would have to be used.

 Bambooweb: Lebel gun
The Lebel Model 1886 rifle was the standard bolt action rifle of the French army from 1886 until 1916.
The Lebel was based on the earlier Gras rifle of 1874, sharing it's somewhat oversized bolt handle and general layout.
As is to be expected, the basic concept was soon copied by most rifle designers, and reached it's peak in the Mauser M98, which combined the new powder with a rimless cartridge and box magazine.

 Fusil d'Infanterie Mle.1886 dit "Lebel"
The gun powder in use during this period was fl powder which, after firing left a powdery residue that can easily foul the bore causing the weapon to lose its accuracy and velocity.
The Mle.1886 "Lebel" had a massive, exposed square slab sided receiver which necessitated the use of a two piece stock, a two piece bolt which had a detachable bolthead with straight bolt handle, and a 8 round manually loaded tubular magazine which give this weapon its distinctive look from all other weapons during that period.
In 1893 the military had found some weaknesses in the arm so the Lebel was upgraded with the following major modifications, the bolt head was modified with a separate rotating shield to allow powder gases to safely be vented from the weapon in case of a primer was pierced or of cartridge case rupture.

The Lebel, a hastily-designed derivative of the tubular-magazine Kropatschek, and its 8x50mmR cartridge, which was based on the case head dimensions of the earlier 11mm Gras round to theoretically allow for emergency conversions of older rifles, were obsoleted almost overnight by Mauser and Mannlicher designs which were loaded with clips or from chargers.
Being saddled with the fat, rimmed 8mm Lebel round prevented the use of a Mauser-style staggered box magazine, and with the cartridges stacked vertically, the new carbine could only accommodate three rounds without (it was thought at the time) making the receiver impractically bulky, but it could be reloaded much faster than any shortened Lebel.
The sights were the same as those on the Lebel; a tangent-type rear sight combined with a coarse front blade that had a thin notch in the middle for fine aiming.

A total of only 1,168 Model 1917 Browning machine guns were delivered to Europe before hostilities ceased in November 1918, and the first recorded use of the BMG in combat did not occur until September 26, 1918, toward the end of the war.
The Hotchkiss remained the primary medium-heavy machine gun used by the A.E.F throughout the summer of 1918 when most of the decisive battles of WWI were fought, and only replaced by the late arrival Browning in the fall of 1918.
With 130+ pounds of gun and mount, plus all the ammo that is required to feed a machine gun of this capacity, it would have been necessary for soldiers to devise such a method to easily move the gun from one position to another without disassembly.
