		Gas-operated rifles, like the Hotchkiss and Colt machine guns, have fixed barrels and are worked by a portion of the powder-gases which is allowed to escape from the barrel through a small hole near the muzzle, thence entering a cylinder and working a piston in connexion with the breech mechanism.
		In both rifles, on the left side of the stock, is a long-distance sight (graduated to 2800 yds.), which consists of an aperture sight near the bolt and a dial and movable pointer near the hand-guard.
		Rifles of r2-bore gauge, firing a spherical ball, were subsequently made, with broad and shallow grooves making one turn in ro ft. The bullet, of the same diameter as the bore, was loaded with a thin patch that took the grooving.

		Thus the main spring to the rifle is tucked away in the bolt knob.
		The rifle pictured is a Dutch Gewer 71/88, which retains is similar to the rifle above, with the exception that in 1888 the gun was modified to accept a 5 round box magazine.

		Later, in 1893, the Lebel rifle's bolt was slightly modified leading to change the designation of the original Mle 1886 infantry rifle to: " Fusil Mle 1886-M93 ".
		Ironically it was this design lengthened to rifle length which came in as an adjunct to the Lebel rifle in 1915 (the Mle 1907-15 Berthier rifle).
		The Lebel remained the rifle of choice used by the French Foreign Legion,until the adoption of the MAS Mle 1936 rifle.

		The then current Austrian infantry rifle, the Werndl, though a strong and safe action, was prone to severe fouling by heavy use which prevented the drum from rotating, and as a single shot was fast becomming obsolete.
		The rifle went into full production at a time when 8mm cartridges were already showing greater potential and the radically new (the cartridge, not the rifle) Lebel 8mm smokeless rifle was making all of Europe's rifles obsolete.
		Practically all of the M1886 rifles encountered in the US today (including the one shown here) were contract rifles for South America, principally Chile.

		French Lebel cases are Berdan primed and therefore cannot be decapped by modern reloading dies.
		The Lebel's huge rim and ungainly shape made it poorly suited for use in weapons with a detachable box magazine, so in 1929 the French introduced the 7.5x54 MAS, a modern rimless cartridge, for use in their machine guns.
		The 8x50R Lebel is important in the history of cartridge development for its pioneering use of smokeless powder and spitzer bullets, but its design was needlessly quirky even in its day.

		The answer was the final refinement of the French 11mm rifle, the M1885 Kropatchek, known in France as the Chatellerault on account of the armory where it was developed and where all of the new-built M1885's were manufactured.
		The M1885 was in service only a very brief time, being almost immediately supplanted by a refinement of the Mle1885 French Kropatchek, the nearly identical M1886 Lebel, a rifle of no great note, but chambered in the truly revolutionary 8mm Lebel smokeless powder cartridge.
		The magazine cut-off lever for single shot use was operated by rotating a lever fitted into a depression on the top right of the receiver which was (or not, depending on its position) actuated by the base of the bolt.
