Lebensraum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lebensraum, the German term for "habitat" (used both in ecological and sociological contexts; literally, "living space") is used in English to refer to a motivation for Nazi Germany's expansionist policies, to provide extra space for the growth of the German population.
The term Lebensraum in this sense was coined by Friedrich Ratzel in 1897, used as a slogan in Germany referring to the unification of the country and the acquisition of colonies, as per the English and French models.
The biggest obstacle to implement the Lebensraum further was the fact that by the end of 1942 the Sixth Army was defeated in Stalingrad.

 The Ideology of Death: Lebensraum
The concept of Lebensraum as understood in Nazi ideology included in it the assumption that war was inevitable.
Because the Nazi program was based on a large-scale territorial expansion, including countries which Germany could claim neither on the ground of irredenta nor on the basis of her historical rights, no possibility of a peaceful adjustment would be possible in the long run.
Instead Lebensraum must be adapted to the size of the population.

IB European History - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
Lebensraum directly translated means "living space," but policy-wise it stood for an aggressive policy of expansion.
Hitler also supported Lebensraum by masterfully orchestrating a string of agreements which he never wished to fully follow, such as the Non-Aggression Pact (1934), which pledged that Germany would not attack Poland; and the Munich Pact (1938), which said that Germany would stop attacking countries after taking the Sudetenland (Germanic part of Czechoslovakia).
The idea behind Lebensraum was to take control of Russia and border states for "living space." Germany met with initial success, having conquered Poland and one-half of Russia.

 Metroland Online - Art Murmur
Lebensraum is a fantastic fantasy, full of sound characters and furious actions, combining a manic glee worthy of vaudeville comedy with the occasional still moments portentous with seriousness.
Director Margolis keeps the pace fast and furious where it needs to be; the scenes shift locale and time with a phrase, and the actors have to be on top of their craft to create over 50 characters and keep pace with the spectrum of accent, status, vocal rhythm, age and intention.
Lebensraum surprisingly uses cartoon slapstick worthy of Looney Tunes (there is an impromptu beheading by his congregation of an Israeli rabbi, and the lethal beatings of a scholar and a bureaucrat) and Borscht-belt type jokes to generate laughs that slide into a deeper meaning, which leaves the audience suddenly silent.

Suddenly, the first image of "Lebensraum" flashed into his mind: The German chancellor, awakening from a nightmare, deciding to invite 6 million Jews to 'come home' to Germany.
Horovitz dropped all his other projects and began compulsively writing the first draft of "Lebensraum." Because he wanted the parable about tolerance to appeal to young people, he gave the ambitious piece an unusual format: The play features three actors performing 80 roles.
While "Lebensraum" has, to date, been performed all over the world, it has not yet been produced in Germany, Horovitz notes; he feels that may be a result of lingering discomfort about the Holocaust.

The central plan of Lebensraum was to send in German 'settlers' to stake German claim to occupied territories.
Often, before the processes of Lebensraum and resettlement could be accomplished, the occupied territories were ransacked and depleted for natural resources and material supplies: e.g., the Ukraine and Belarus, once controlled by Reich forces had much of their grain and food supplies redirected to Germany for domestic use and the war effort.
Lebensraum was primarily the design and plan for the German people to expand and enlarge their living area; giving room for the "Master Race" to accomplish political, philosophical, economic and cultural sovereignty.

The History Place - Triumph of Hitler
The first steps toward Lebensraum occurred in 1935 when Hitler openly violated the Treaty of Versailles by reintroducing military conscription and began rapidly rebuilding the German Army.
Hitler wanted to resolve the Lebensraum issue by 1943 to 1945 at the very latest to guard against military obsolescence, the aging of the Nazi leadership, and, "it was while the rest of the world was still preparing its defenses that we were obliged to take the offensive."
Although Hitler's ultimate goal was to acquire Lebensraum in the East, namely Russia, he focused the entire conference on his first objectives, the seizure of Austria and Czechoslovakia to protect Germany's eastern and southern flanks.

The German invasion of Russia in 1941 was the first step of Hitler's attempt to acquire more land for the German people to populate.
The conviction that this living space could be gained only in the east, and specifically from Russia, formed the core of this idea, and shaped his policy after his take-over of power in Germany in 1933.

That's a slight problem with the initial 20 minutes of the play, as there are so many people introduced that it becomes a little confusing as to who's who.
Lebensraum mixes humor with chilling drama, exposing the very human fears, prejudices, joys, passions, and sorrows of its large cast of characters.
The production is briskly directed by Jonathan Rest, with the performers switching characters with just a shift of body position and/or the utilization of masks, props, and costume pieces that are sometimes worn and at other times merely held up.
