Lecompton was founded in 1854 and platted on a bluff on the south bank of the (A river in northeastern Kansas; flows eastward to become a tributary of the Missouri River) Kansas River.
Lecompton was considered the center of the pro-slavery movement, which of course was unsuccessful.

The pro-slavery Lecompton Constitution was formulated (Sept., 1857) there, and was ratified (Dec., 1857) after an election in which voters were given a choice only between limited or unlimited slavery; free state men refused to cast their ballots.
President James Buchanan urged Congress to admit Kansas as a slave state under the Lecompton Constitution, but Stephen A. Douglas and his followers broke with the pro-slavery Democrats, and the bill could not pass the House.
Kansas was later (1861) admitted as a free state.

The Lecompton meeting was originally scheduled to meet on February 14th, but was postponed until the 18th, ostensibly because of the death of Councilor W. Richardson.

Pro-slavery forces were never in the majority in Kansas, but through political maneuvers, violence and bullying, they were able to form a territorial government and draft a constitution.
The failure of the "Lecompton Constitution" and the eventual joining of Kansas to the Union as a Free State pushed the South toward withdrawing from the United States and the start of the Civil War.

In 1856, a proposed capitol building was started in Lecompton with an appropriation of $50,000 from the federal government.
It was never completed for that purpose, since the state capital was moved elsewhere.
