Brazil nut family (Lecythidaceae) in the New World - Encyclopedia of Earth
The Lecythidaceae are a pantropical family of trees found in the tropics of Central and South America, southeast Asia, and Africa, including Madagascar.
In a 100-hectare plot established for the study of Lecythidaceae in central Amazonian Brazil, the Brazil nut family accounts for 12% of the individual trees and 6% of the species of trees.

 Phenology
Although flowering species of Lecythidaceae occurs mostly throughout the dry season and into the early wet season, fruit maturation of all dry season bloomers takes place at the beginning of the wet season, presumably to take advantage of the increased moisture, nutrients, and gap opportunities available at that time of year.
The number of individuals of Lecythidaceae in flower throughout the dry season is also high, with the peak of 15 November caused by the simultaneous flowering of two nectar reward-producers, Couratari stellata and Eschweilera micrantha (Figs.
Flowers of Lecythidaceae on the ground are conspicuous because of their presence in the dry season in contrast to their absence in the wet season.

Roots, wood, leaves, fruits and seeds of Lecythidaceae are also known to be used extensively in the field of traditional medicines though the pharmacological properties of most species have yet to be studied.
Furthermore it is necessary to study the physiology and the ecology of the germination of the seeds as well as the dynamic of the population.
Lecythidaceae truly is worthy of the crown of most successful tree family in the Amazon rainforest, and symbol of the most botanically-rich river found there, the Negro River.

Anchovy pear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The anchovy pear (also called the river pear) is a fruit native to the West Indies and is often found near rivers or marshes in large colonies.
It grows on the evergreen tree Grias cauliflora of the Lecythidaceae (Brazil nut) family.
The edible nuts grow clumped together in large, round, woody and extremely hard seed pods the size of a large grapefruit.

Lecythidaceae of a Central Amazonian Lowland Forest: Implications for Conservation.
Our data for Lecythidaceae confirm the concept that Amazonia is a center of tree species richness and support the suggestion that large biological reserves in central Amazonia would protect considerable Neotropical tree species richness.
Lecythidaceae in a 100-hectare plot surrounded by continuous forest at Reserve 1501 (Km 41) represent 17.6% of all currently described species of Lecythidaceae.

The phylogenetic relationships of the genera of Lecythidaceae and representatives of Scytopetalaceae were assessed using cladistic analysis of both molecular (rbcL and trnL sequences) and morphological data.
Asteranthos and members of Scytopetalaceae should be treated as a subfamily of Lecythidaceae, while Napoleonaea and Crateranthus (the latter based solely on morphological features) should remain in the subfamily Napoleonaeoideae.
The Lecythidaceae are recircumscribed, and Asteranthos and members of Scytopetalaceae are included in Scytopetaloideae.

 The Lecythidaceae Pages
Neotropical Lecythidaceae are among the most spectacular plants in the world because of their showy flowers and large woody fruits.
Lecythidaceae are found as far north as Mexico and as far south as Paraguay, but are not nearly as abundant or species rich as in the Amazon.
For example, as the names of species of the Brazil nut family become known, and information is made available about how to identify these species, more in depth studies about their distribution, pollination, dispersal, habitat preferences, and their relationships with other species such as predators become possible.
