One of the most bootlegged material ever and certainly the most common Led Zeppelin rarity, the BBC Sessions is being hailed as the first official "live" release, since "The Song Remains the Same" in 1976.
The group's pure intensity and power is captured on the BBC Sessions and hopefully there'll be more rare material from the vaults released in the near future, perhaps a proper home video.
Unfortunately, there is a "lost session" missing here, that the BBC apparently does not have in its vaults.

Primal, grinding electric blues, lilting English folk, Eastern influenced groove, gritty psychedelia, hard funk fusion; Zeppelin was a brilliant, visionary band, and these live sessions prove that at their rawest, they could also kick out jams that can drill a hole in your chest.
Hearing these sessions is like discovering Zeppelin all over again; well-worn tracks are given a sinewy, coarse treatment that makes them sound incredibly fresh and spiked with electricity.
Zeppelin's other strength was their gossamer beauty, in evidence in the added gorgeous coda to "That's the Way" and the tender treatment of "Goin to California".

In 1974, Led Zeppelin launched their own record label called Swan Song, named after one of only five songs that the band never recorded for commercial release (the track was re-tooled as "Midnight Moonlight" by Page's post-Zeppelin band The Firm on their first album).
Zeppelin traveled in a private jet, rented out entire sections of hotels, and became the subjects of many of rock's most famous stories of debauchery: trashed hotel rooms, sexual escapades, and heavy use of drugs including alcohol.

Just last week Led Zeppelin, the 1970's seminal hard rock and heavy metal band, has managed to surpass country music star Garth Brooks as the second biggest-selling musical act in the States (the Beatles are number one with close to 100 million album sales, while Zeppelin weighs in at a respectable 63.8 million sold).
Their sound was a fresh kick in the saggy seat of the idealistic hippie movement coming from the west coast in the late sixties; bombastic, psychedelic, unsettling and dangerous all at once.
The real treasures for Zeppelin fans here, however, are the two tracks that haven't been officially released in any format, "The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair", which is typical Zeppelin blues-crunch, and "Something Else", with an early rock and roll swagger accentuated by John Paul Jones' boogie woogie piano.

In the mid '70s when dinosaurs rocked the earth, Led Zeppelin live were most often bloated, listless and unfocused.
BBC Sessions finally delivers the goods--a fresh, taut band just getting ahold of their sound, with only a few hints of the indulgence to come.
The three versions of "Dazed and Confused" on this two-CD set are prime examples: the first, from 1969 and coming in at a relatively slim six and a half minutes, is an almost skeletal blues with a compact solo.

Since the many foibles of Led Zeppelin still occupy a reasonable plot of debate sime among my peers, I was delighted to see the BBC Sessions coming out, if only to fuel a few more conversations about John Bonham's drinking habits.
It seems that in the recent years, with the release of several box sets, multi- disc remasters and tribute albums, the Sessions seems only another addition to the slow, odorous Led Zeppelin corporate behemoth.
I had heard, justifiably, that the sound on the Sessions was state- of- the- art for the period, and that the tapes had been meticulously cleaned-up in accordance with the Zeppelin Remastering Bible (Vols 1-34.) We all know that there's nothing worse than a shittily recorded live show, and this ain't it.
