Leduc was the largest discovery in Canada in 33 years, and triggered a boom that would lead to the discovery of the bulk of Canada’s oil reserves, hidden deep in the limestone and dolomite reefs of the Devonian.
Alberta changed from a predominately rural and agricultural province to an urban economy dominated by the oil and gas industry.
The original well, Leduc #1, was capped in 1974, after producing 300,000 barrels of oil and 9 million cubic metres of natural gas.

The contingent of about 30 marched to the Leduc Inn, with placards that read: "A Racist-Free Alberta by the Year 2000," and handed out leaflets detailing the nature of the CLR, and why it should it be opposed, to motorists and pedestrians.
Since the CLR moved from Ontario to Alberta in the late 1980s, they have largely escaped the presence of demonstrators outside their meetings.
The Edmonton Journal, read by thousands, used the material as the basis for a story which stated that previous CLR meetings had been attended by convicted racist Jim Keegstra, that the Alberta Human Rights Commission had recommended the cancellation of their 1996 meeting, and that the Jewish Federation of Edmonton was opposed to the CLR.
