John Ledyard the Traveler, of whom I have previously written, was the son of Captain John Ledyard and Abigail Hempstead Ledyard, of Southold lineage and birth.
Ledyard next planned to lead an expedition into America's unexplored Northwest but although Robert Morris, the signer" offered to outfit a ship, none was found available On June 1, 1784, the frustrated adventurer wrote his mother at Southold that he was about to sail for Europe and contemplated a voyage aound the world.
The New York Mirror of October 1, 1836, declared that Ledyard added another to the catalogue of those whose lives have been sacrificed to extend the boundaries of human knowledge, and that no ordinary man would traverse burning deserts, frozen lakes and regions of eternal snows unless animated by some high principles.

Ledyard’s idea to keep away from bond issuing and stock-jobbing, which policies were acceptable to the new owners of the road, and he was given permission to carry out his personal plans and ideas.
Ledyard proceeded to demolish every steel railroad bridge in the eastern division and rebuilt scores of miles of trackage and roadbed, eliminating the curves and steep grades as far as possible.
Ledyard was united in marriage to Miss Mary L’Hommedieu, a daughter of Stephen L’Hommedieu of Cincinnati, who promoted and was president of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad for a quarter of a century.

The Cayuga Indian Nation of New York and the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma were plaintiffs in the district court and appellees/cross-appellants in the court of appeals.
On July 27, 1795, the State of New York signed an agree ment with the Cayuga majority under which the State pur ported to acquire the bulk of the Tribe's remaining lands in exchange for an annuity of $1800.
After ruling that the State of New York was liable to the Tribes for wrongful conversion of tribal land, the district court addressed the remedial issues presented by the case.
