Born in Madera, California, Evans was undefeated in high school and won his first AAU championship in 440 yd (402.34 m) in 1966, shortly after graduating.
Evans went on to head the national atheletics programs in six different African Nations before accepting a position as head cross country/track & field coach at the University of South Alabama.
Evans' college and amatuer careers as well as his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement is chronicled in Frank Murphy's The Last Protest: Lee Evans in Mexico City.

The ITA disbanded in 1976, and Evans sought to be reinstated as an amateur.
He was eventually reinstated in 1980, but, at the age of thirty-three, was just a shadow of the athlete he had been in his prime.

There have been many examples of knee problems plaguing different UW athletes in the past few years, but they took the time to rehab and strengthen themselves and are now putting themselves in the position to succeed in their post-UW days.
If Evans wants to make the right decision regarding the health of his knee, he will take the time to do the therapy right, give his knee a wealth of time to recover and return to UW to reap the benefits of his patience.
